Why are new 2D animated films so rare?

3D animated films like Ratatouille, WALL-E, Finding Nemo, etc are brilliant but I think it is sad that they seem to have totally taken over from 2D films. Why can't companies do both? I love the charm and character of classic 2D Disney animated films and think it's about time they started making new ones again.

Isn't Disneys new film about a black princess going to be 2D with 3D effects like their 90's movies were (Aladdin, The Lion King etc.)?

Paddy :D

Disney's 2D movies took a very bad turn, and they were generally awful for the last few, hence why I don't mind too much that 2D animation doesn't have a stronghold on the animated market anymore. They just weren't up to standard.

It's not really an animation problem when the stories are bad though, there is an equal chance that a 3D animated film could turn out the same.

Hadn't heard of that one, maybe Disney are trying to resurrect 2D animation after all.

It's cheaper, easier and quicker nowadays to just use CGI instead of hand drawing everything.

Disney are having a slight revival of them with Princess and the Frog and Rupunzel.

The last good Disney 2-D animation was The Emperor's New Groove IMO, after that with Home On The Range, Atlantis and Brother Bear etc. Disney started to loose it - knocking out any random crap they could. I'm looking forward to the Princess and the Frog as I adore 2-D animation, with Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King ranking as some of my favourite films ever. I hope the new films are old school Disney with classy show tunes and memorable characters.

I remember Aladdin being released, I was only 6 at the time and can remember going into McDonalRAB with my brother and having a 'Happy Meal', I think I got a model of the Genie as a free gift!

Haven't seen the film in a long while, have to watch it sometime.

I also have never actually seen Lion King! :o I don't know why though, I'd love to see it.

You have to watch the Lion King, it's awesome!

I remember the genie toy too, you twisted the bottom of the lamp and he popped out the with the lid on his head.

That's a really sweet trailer.:) Love the frog's expressions every time he is thwarted in the kissing.:D The colours and style remind me of Beauty And The Beast which is no bad thing. For some strange reason, the Princess looks to me to be based on Halle Berry.

Count me in as another who prefers 2D Animation too:).

I don't know why but there's just somthing more enchanting and magical about 2D Animation which I really don't get the same feeling from 3D Animation but then that's just me.

Oh and count me in as another who's looking forward to "The Princess And The Frog", I just can't wait:D!

Now I admit I'm actually more of a Dark Movie person than a Light Movie person but there's just somthing about Disney I really can't help but love to bits:o.

If anyone knows how to do Light Movies perfectly and make people love them it's Disney IMHO:).

DepenRAB on the technique. Obviously there's a world of difference between bashing out an episode of South Park and doing a 90 minute movie for the cinema.

If anyone has Sky HD there's a 90 min documentary about Pixar on Anytime at the moment - I presume it will be on one of the film channels at some point too.

It covers the demise of Disney 2D animation and the shift to 3D CG animation in great detail. Pixar are basically the new Disney with hit after hit (I don't think they've had a dud yet). Their key is not the method of animation, rather the people involved in making the films, how they come up with the stories etc... In the early days of 3D animation Disney shied away from it becuase it took too long and was too expensive. Precisely for these reasons Pixar had to make sure each and every film were as close to perfect as possible - they simpley couldn't afford to produce a bad film. Disney made a stack of money distributing the early Pixar films and as a result thought they could churn out 2D films in parallel and make money from them without making the bigger scale films like Alladin, Lion King etc... As it turned out by then Pixar had employed all the best animators so Disney's film were awful. Now Pixar are owned by Disney and are responsible for both 3D & 2D films, employing the same animation techniques for both types, so future Disney 2D films should be much, much better.

Watching this documentary was very interesting and reminded me how much I love both the traditional 2D and new 3D animations. So much so I'm going to see Wall-E later.

Its funny, they make it a clear distinction that Pixar is part of the Disney family; but not actually Disney. My feelings is that they want to cash in on the success of Pixar, but not be restricted to 3d CGI; as noted with the Frog Princess.
