Why are American children so under-educated?

I work with high school graduates. My colleagues all over the US see the same thing: US high school graduates are so far behind the kids in other countries even though they have received HS diplomas. They only have the most rudimentary skills in math, English and the sciences. I would love to know why.

Actually, America has very good schools and students. In fact, high school dropout rates are at the lowest in history and IQ scores have been steadily increasing. The problem is that there are many bad schools in America that bring down the national average. These schools are the problem in America. They are under-funded and are lacking in quality teachers. The average and higher average schools in America are just as good as any school around the world. If we didnt have the top schools in the world, we would never be able to compete economically, militarily, or technologically with other nations.... and yet here we are number 1 in all of those areas.

America child have no work ethic! they think everything handed to them so they feel like they not need education. parent too slack on school, and they not try to put any effort in. they come to Shanghai! we asian no play when it come to education! you bring dishonor to family and get karate chop if you no bring home best mark possible in all class!

The educational systems have gotten lazy with their choices of professors and teachers. There are many with degrees yet rely on resources like text books to teach their students, lacking the knowledge on these subjects themselves. Look at the Medical and Phys Ed Teachers, many of them are fat. Or math and science teachers who don't do any experiments with out using a text book to guide them along while teaching their class. The effort they put into educating kids, is the same response they get from kids, not to mention their parents aren't too focused on their education either.

However, look at this economy for the past years. Not every school district has the money to advance especially public schools. And that sucks for the teachers who rely on resources to help school kids.
