Why All The Fuss? So-called "classic" movies you don't like

Again inspired by the "Classic Films You've Never Seen" thread, what about so-called "classics" that you think are a right old pile of pants - or at least way overrated?

Let's try not to get bogged down in ugly slanging matches over each other's choices!! Just stick to lists and - if you feel like it - a one-liner saying why you don't like a particular film.

Here's some of mine to start things off:

The Sound Of Music (but I enjoyed it when I was 4 - allegedly!!)
Mary Poppins ("Chimchimcheroo" - enough said!)
2001: Space Odyssey (long time since I saw it and I don't recall much of it - except that I was bored to tears)
The English Patient (plodding in the extreme - nothing much happens in the first 2 hours)
Gone With The Wind (I didn't last the course - dated, melodramatic tosh made even worse by Vivien Leigh's dreadful hammy acting)
Tommy (too surreal for my taste)

Casablanca,

I didnt really engage with it and spent the whole time I was watching it, waiting for it to warm up and be the classic that it is purported to be!

I seem to remember a similar thread to this a few years back :D Happy days...

American Beauty, Forest Gump and most of Spielberg's back catalogue gets my vote; sentimental papp has its place, but I don't think it should be pandered to as first-class cinema...

Oh, and I also agree with 77amy77 that 'The Godfather' isn't upto much either - more a 'Goodfellas' man myself ;)

Lord Of The Rings 1, 2, 3
Harry Potter 1, 2, 3, 4, (and when they are released) 5, 6, 7
2001: A Space Odyssey
Lost In Translation
Anything with Michael Caine in it, and I do mean ANYTHING

I could go on, but my boss is walking around so I daren't let him see the screen!

Paddy :D

All the Star Wars movies. The Godfather trilogy. Tried to watch Space Odyssey- But fell asleep towarRAB the end of it. Watched it a second time and nearly cried at how slow it is.

I just don't get The Sound of Music. I only watch it for the title song at the beginning. :o

APOCALYPSE NOW and The Deer Hunter. Is something wrong with me? I think I've tried to watch both of these atleast a dozen times...Couldn't tell you what happened in either.

I saw "Apocalypse Now" at the flix when it first came out - I was 14 and thought I was really "adult" getting let in to see a movie rated "X" (for the youngsters reading this, that's an "18" today). But I hated it, as I'd been expecting an "action / adventure" type movie that might appeal to your average 14 year-old.

I saw it again some years later on TV and appreciated it more. Now it's one of my Top 5 movies of all time.

As for "The Deer Hunter", as far as I'm concerned they could have condensed the first part of the move (which clocks in at over an hour I think) into maybe 15 minutes. It drags interminably and unnecessarily. The rest of it is great, if a little harrowing in places. Excellent performances all round.
