Who do u think is the best bassist

Well that's a shame because bassists who write well make something really wonderful. Just wondering but I assume when you listen to music you never really listen to individual parts just the music as a whole, right?

If i`ve got a bass player who wants to show off all the time rather than making the songs sound good i`ll fire the bastard.

Read carefully , i`ve bolded the part you & boo boo seem to have missed. And I should add that was in response to Boo Boo saying about bass solos which he later edited out.

Correct, however I do detest funk music.

Please spare me any long winded debate, I have hated it since I was 15 years old and I am a little long in the tooth for listening to something that I have detested for 17 years.

As for the bass, I am crazy about rockabilly stand-up bass and don't feel that it neeRAB to follow any sort of formula. Electric bass to me is just ho hum and doesn't add much to the overall product, call me crazy but it just isn't a visually exciting instrument to watch someone play.

Stand-up bass however you can: Twirl, stand on, hump, lift behind head, light on fire.

Stand-up bass > Electric bass

That is all

I happen to agree with both of you.
Urban's point I think, is that the overall package of a song is more important than any individual musician and that persons talent.
My guess is he would dislike a lead guitarist being flash if it didn't contribute to the finished article.

However a piece of flash bass playing in context of the song, works wonders for me.
I'd wank myself silly over a Jamerson bass run any day.

I think you could only aim that description at concertos, where the piano part was written by a piano virtuoso (Rachmaninov or Liszt for example) or the violin part was written by a great violinist (was Bruch?), as most orchestral or group classical was written with the overall sound in mind, not the complexities of the individual instrumental parts.

Tere is no best bassist ever really, but some of the greats are Jaco Pastorius and Geddy Lee. Cliff Burton was good on Anesthesia. Flea and Les Claypool are good at slap bass. Marcus Miller also.
