Who do u think is the best bassist

And my... "who do I think is the best bassist" (seeing as I'm here) is, James Jamerson Motown RecorRAB 1959-1972.
He owned every song he ever played in, without dominating the tune.
Best bass player that ever lived. 1936-1983 RIP.

Charles Mingus, Peter Hook and Kim Deal (not the most technically amazing bassists, but their lines were killer), Scott LeFaro, Stanley Clarke.

Since when can't bass be a solo instrument?... It has been a major soloing instrument in jazz since, well, forever.

For some genres, bass is way more important on guitar, guitar often times is just icing on the cake, what is one of the most important things in a song?... The beat, and you can rarely have a good beat without bass, imagine funk music without bass (i don't even want to), it would freaking suck ass.

side note that's kind of relevant. I play tuba in concert and marching band and I hate composeurs who give the bass line straight stacato notes. Music is suppose to be interesting and complex parts make music interesting.

Case in point, you're making it out like any musician with a modest amount of instrumental talent is a wanker... Thats a huge insult to people who actually devote a lot of their time to music and learning how to play, you may prefer some hack who dosen't know what hes doing and just joined the band to make money, but that dosent make him a good bassist now does it?... There are some really f*cking talented bassists out there, but oh wait, they're all wankers, they suck... I'm better than them, i mean, i can't play bass worth the sh*t.... But i can play with emotion, you see, i don't dunno how to play bass so i just make weird noises with it by farting on it, i fart with great emotion, and emotion is the only thing that matters... Sure its purely subjective, but because i fart on my bass with emotion that makes me better than Charles Mingus, all he did was wank, you know, because he played his bass instead of just standing around with it doing nothing like Cliff Williams or any decent bass player... Also i'm in a popular rock band and i wear cool sunglasses, so i must be good.

You seem to be trying to argue a subjective point with logic and it`s not working.

You seem trying to get the point across that solos are a part of songs and that some songs are written primarily with one instrument in mind.... Well thats fine. I accept that they`re written in the context of the song.

But that doesn`t mean that I have to like them , just in the same way that i`d wouldn`t like just any song with no solos in them. You`re basically trying to paint it in black & white.By all means write a technical solo passage in a song. What i`m trying to say is i`ll judge it by the song , not the solo.If it fits the song then great. But if I think the song is rubbish then I won`t listen to it.Regardless of how great the solo is.

Rock/Metal Favourites:
Flea (RHCP), Les Claypool (Primus), Steve Harris (Iron Maiden), Dirk Lance (Incubus), Geddy Lee (Rush), Tony Choy (Atheist), Tony Levin (King Crimson)
Tim Commerford (RATM), JPJ (Led Zep), John Entwistle (The Who)and the list goes on...

Other Favourites: Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Stu Hamm, James Jamerson

So overall, my fav bassist ever would have to be Flea.

Oh my. Shavo of SOAD? He didn't even write the material for either Hypnotize or Mezmerize. I don't know about before, but his bass lines aren't that great either way.

 Im a bass player and im not celibate

All forms of classical music however, require a hell of a lot of technical efficiency to perform, timing is everything, and for a genre known for it's complex changes of time signatures and what not, timing is damn hard to keep up, every instrumentalist is showing off to some extent, cept maybe the guy who plays triangle, we all know that solo pieces are very damn important in classical music... Some forms of classical music is based completely around showing off... Neo classical being the ultimate example... Paginini did a lot of showing off, in fact, some consider him the first wanker, so to speak.

Oh but there is showing off in classical music. The Composeur he gets to choose what sections he wants to shine and many times there are bias's. And a lot of classical has extremely pertinant bass lines.

Why do you keep refering to it as showing off and ego driven, it bugs me. Some people talk about how a lot of music lacks talent but you're saying that these people need to dull themselves down? No. I'm all for it. Play your best. Impress me.
