So you think Viggo's underrated?

Crap - now I'm confused as to which thread I'm on!

Oh, I hear he's pretty good (as is Brick), but I don't think I've seen any of this films yet.

It's surprising how it appeared that he wasn't even in the movie. Forest killed his role, but James held his own and made his character interesting and likeable when obviously FW was going to be eclipsing everyone else.

Wow, I have such a long list of underated actresses.
I must start with the cast of my life without me....

Mark Ruffalo: Was beautiful in you can count on me. He epitomizes good acting in my book

Sara Polley: She's been great in many movies including: Fear, the Sweet hereafter; my life without me; guinevere and so many other roles.

Of course: Scott Speedman. Just go watch the 24th day if you don't believe me.

Now for my list black actors:

Don cheadle: he will forever be mouse to me
KAdeem hardison: greatest comic black actor
and of course angela bassett

A brilliant actress who doesn't get half the recognition she deserves in my opinion is Kathy Baker. She's been in heaps and heaps of movies, playing a wide variety of characters and yet people still mostly know her for her TV work as Jill Brock on Picket Fences and The Hook Lady on Boston Public. But, hello? Can you believe it's actually the same woman hiding behind Joyce Monroe from Edward Scissorhands and Sally from Cold Mountain? It certainly doesn't help that when you dare mention her, most people mix her up with Kathy Bates.

Cillian Murphy, most definitely!! He's so talented, but goshdarnit, he needs more movies! Agreed, about James McAvoy.

I checked out the first page and I have to agree about Billy Crudup! He's really good and he's very handsome. I wish he would get more work. I love to watch him on the screen.

How about Viggo Mortensen? Aragorn was a well played character but he's had really great performances since forever yet he's not an A lister. I think it has to do with him actively avoiding getting too popular or too well known. But his talent is overrated by a lot of people who don't even know his name, he's just "Aragorn" to them.

Ryan Gosling, Ben Foster, Sophia Bush, Jensen Ackles, Ed Westwick, Jared Padalecki, Emile Hirsch, Justin Long, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mekhi Phifer, Jessica Tovey and Todd Lasance.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Yes the kid from 3rd Rock From The Sun.
He was hilarious in that, and was also in a movie with Patricia Arquette called Holy Matrimony which was kinda lame, but he was only like 10 in it and he was so funny. He was also in Sweet Jane where he played a kid with AIDS, he was amazing. And Mysterious Skin, this is a movie I can't forget. He played a molestation victim who grows up to become a male prostitute. He meets up with another kid who was also molested by their baseball coach at the same time, but he thinks he was abucted by aliens and eventually comes to terms with the whole thing. It doesn't sugar coat anything and is very frank and at times quite graphic, so I can't really say I LIKED the movie, but the performances were incredible, especially Joseph's. Wow, that was longer than I intended it to be. lol
Btw, can't wait to see Brick which he is also in. :P

Hm... Let's remember we all have our definitions and ideas of what something means and who applies...

Freddie You meant ROCKSTAR? But let me tell you a secret, Rainstorm rocks my sox. ;)

Kim Poirier, a new upcoming talent! Look out for her!

Sara Downing, shes appeared in quite a few of my fave projects and I love her in all of them!

Ryan Gosling is a wonderful actor that somehow goes unnoticed. I don't get it, he should be getting big roles. He has a strong presence and he can sell you anything.

*nods* Yeah, I'd probably define it similarly. :)

See - I have to presume you're joking because anyone who's a household name like these people - and that includes folks like Jake Gyllenhaal - can't really be considered underrated by definition...at least not standard definitions.

And are you all kidding me? Of course Jake G. was famous before Brokeback - you all couldn't stop talking about him in Donnie Darko, to name just one film! Really, he got his due.

Hmm...I agree to a certain extent but I could probably name five films Steve Buscemi's in (in fact I KNOW I can), yet I'd still call him underrated...except by those who appreciate real talent, of course. ;)

I suppose it would depend on whom you're asking - if you're asking the average person on the street and s/he doesn't know the actor, that might be telling.

See, I think there's a slight difference between underrated and overlooked, which the lack of award wins or nominations, critical acclaim and the other stuff you mention belong in the latter. IMO, underrated is when you're just not getting any praise (or as much praise) for performances. But yeah, ROCKSTAR, Malone does play a lot of similar characters, but she does them well.

(Yeah, whoops,.)

Now this guy here is a gem. He makes characters in a way that you can't believe he is acting them out.

I would post more but I'm sleepy  I'll comeback with some names.

^ I agree. Ryan Gosling came to mind right away. James McAvoy is great too. He can express so much with just a look.
