Sand or topsoil? Which material drains the fastest? which material has the highest permeability? Which material retained the most water? Which material would dry the fastest after rain?
 
Uh... that's pretty open.

But I'm going to take a random geology shot in the dark and say that rocks are made up of smaller minerals grains...

sand has fairly uniformly sized large particles.

Top soil is a mixture of sand-sized particles and smaller silt sized ones plus vegetable matter etc.

Sand has big gaps between the grains and drains very fast and also has high permeability.

The silt siazed particles hold back the water eg clayey soils are poorly draining. Canals are lined with clay to keep the water in.

sand dries fastest - look at a beach as the tide goes out.
