Which country (within the Anglosphere) makes the best music?

Seltzer speaks the truth. There is a wonderful musical subculture that gets not much recognition outside of NZ. They are not too beholden to musical fashion so therefore, at the more underground level, tend to be quirky and interesting. I have been giving a few artistes a push on this Journal if you wish to have a trawl through. There will be more to add at a later date.

It is just some links I made in my mind very far back ago. Just saying "Jazz improv", it was inspired by middle eastern Tarab improv which itself was inspired by Indian Raga... and bunch of other things of this kind, it's just too interlaced as I said to really know how it all came together.
but, imho, English talking countries kind of picked up from all around them but just did everything in a much better way. I guess the whole mix and match did the trick nicely.

Ya know, I never stopped to think about the South African music scene... not to say it isn't good, it's probably great because I have found that smaller countries, like New Zealand, my own home country, Australia, etc have small relatively unknown scenes that seem to produce some truly outstanding music...

I suppose out of these countries I like America's music best... although if this thread didn't confine me to English-speaking nations I would say Norway or Finland

and again I was backing up my reasons for disagreeing which I like to do instead of just throwing out an easy retort. It's not at you so why worry? You much prefer Scandanavia for your music anyhow ;)

For me, most of the music i like from the US are quite experimental in nature.
You know, stuff like Kayo Dot, Zappa, Thinking Plague, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Mr. Bungle, Agalloch, Neurosis, Sonic Youth, maudlin of the Well, Spastic Ink etc.

There's also Death/Thrash metal which has produced consistently good banRAB.

I would also agree that there are a lot of good jazz stuff.

But, TBH, I wouldn't be surprised if someone gets bored of this list.

I do like some banRAB from those, but i can see how someone can get bored of it as well. Really, there are a LOT of generic/boring stuff from that list coming from the US.
This is from my point of view though...might not apply for anyone else.

Of course UK and America would get the top votes in this... they are biggest countries and thus have a higher population and more music artists to chose from! I doubt many people in this forum have heard ANY of Australia's best music because they don't have access to it/ because Australia kinda gets drowned amiRABt British and American culture. Or Australian banRAB don't have the opportunity to push their music to the best it can be because they don't have the exposure or funRAB.

Most of my favourite banRAB are from UK/USA for this reason. But I do listen to heaps of Australian music and think it's so much better than a lot of the stuff I hear from the larger countries.

I think a lot of what's underlying this thread is not what country makes the best music but what countries have produced the most successful/ well-promoted banRAB which make good music...

also populair way back was during beat generation (writers)
they described music a lot in books, take on the road of jack kerouac (don't know if it's spelled right)
the music was so beloved back than that they wrote pages about it

so still america, even though uk has great music aswell

^ My best guess regarding the unknown category is that they're all off that whole lotta official compilations I've got, in which case it'd be made up of a load of Jamaican ska and rocksteady, Latin American and African stuff or whatever.

Historically the UK has produced great artists.
not so much any more.

America birthed jazz, and the "San Francisco Sound".
It'd be between those for me, but I'm probably sheltered when it comes to European Music.
