Which country (within the Anglosphere) makes the best music?

UK has made the coolest music - it's not even close. All the music I like was made by the brits, except for a couple indie banRAB. America beats UK in rap, and that's about it.

The Kinks
The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
The Who
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Deep Purple
Black Sabbath
Yes
David Bowie
Jethro Tull
Sex Pistols
Joy Division
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
The Smiths
New Order
Blur
Oasis
Arctic Monkeys.

Not a bad list is it? U.K for me!

I think it's pretty close between the US and UK. Definitely positives on both sides and it should really only seriously be contested between these two forces I think. I was left contemplating a huge history of rock and electronic music in the UK against a great history of songwriters and pretty much the whole history of jazz and hip hop stateside.

I decided to use my last.fm top 50 artists to decide, and it came out with 20-17 to the USA, which surprised me somewhat. So much so that I went against it and voted for the UK mainly on my infatuation with Radiohead, although looking back I really can't decide. I think it really would depend upon how I was feeling on the day.

I think if you included Europe excluding the UK it would become more competitive, although I'm not sure how well those countries would take being lumped together. You'd have the great plethora of music in Iceland, the German electronic and house scene, some great music is produced in Scandinavia recently and there's a good history in Ireland and France also.

I find it impossible to choose between the UK and US, i spose my personal taste would dictate that i chose America, but as to which country has spawned the greatest music is too difficult a Q to answer. All i will say is i am very proud of British music over the decades. The 60's, 70's and to a lesser extent the 80's were all about the UK in my opinion. Over the last 20 years the US has dominated my ears.

Im going for Germany, screw the english-speaking criteria.

Well, if we are talking about metal, there are many i could think of.

Meshuggah
Opeth
Pain Of Salvation
Dismeraber
Dissection
Sacramentum
At the Gates
Dark Tranquility
InFlames(old)
Soilwork
Bathory
Bloodbath
Katatonia
Candlemass
Entorabed
Amon Amarth
Silencer
Marduk
Diabolical Masquerade
Arckanum
Evergrey
Therion
Falconer
Thyrfing

Obviously, you need to like metal for this. From an outside point of view, i think some of these banRAB are great.

I guess it's a good thing I voted for "Other"

Does It Offend You, Yeah? is one of the only indie electronic banRAB I could get into. They remind me of a dirtier Daft Punk, overdrive cranked to the Big Black setting. I'm not crazy about them, but they make shatty banRAB like MGMT and CSS look even worse.

A while back I tried listening to LCD SounRABystem (after all three albums were shoved down my throat until my esophagus bled) and I thought they were boring as hell. Shame though, I've read James Murphy's lyrics and they are extremely well written.

Looks like I'm a bit late for this poll, but what the hell. UK for me. If just for the sheer volume of artistes I love who are indeed British.

:offtopic:
Besides that, for non-English speaking countries I'd say Brazil, Mali and Cuba

Churchill would have been nothing without his parents, but he was still a greater person. The influences are not necessarily better than what they influence and vice versa.

What's weird in this thread is that it confines you in the English talking countries when everything is so interlaced.

I can't imagine British Psychedelia without the Indian and middle-eastern influence on its music, the Sitare itself changed a lot. Or just the African influence on Jazz and Blues.

*It's like we are only judging half of the last century, forgetting everything that brought us there - If we were talking about the music in general, I would've easily said "India".

that's because almost all of them have to jump ship to make it big here. distribution channels exist worldwide for American and British music because their base markets are so large, not so much the other way around. you're going to see an Australian band appear in media outlets? you better have a sweet fucking top 40 hit from them at some point or another.

the system is so fucked right now that the big four are having trouble moving units of anything, domestic or no.
