Where is the line between sell-out and talentless nobodies?

They might not have conceived themselves as a band who would fulfil such a role, however, like it or not, intentionally or inadvertently, that's exactly what they do. They

A: fill a certain niche
B: attract a certain specific demographic of the music-listening audience
C: are therefore commercially viable
D: hence why a major label is interested in having them on their team.

Compare that to many indie pop banRAB like Of Montreal, Les Savy Fav, etc., you'd never get them on major labels as they are just not commercially viable enough. Oomph, GoRABmack and so forth, however, are. They appeal to a fairly significant subset of the music listening demographic, as I said. They attract many people of a certain ideological/psychological bearing who are attracted to their way of looking at things and their hyper-depressive melancholic darkness, etc.

No but being on the chart from time to time is not, being #1 on the German chart one time in thier 20 year history, just simply existing on the chart, that doesn't constitute as chart monster.

You've really shown nothing new (in your little wiki copy/paste or where ever you got it from). Yeah, in Germany, in the second half of thier 20 years as a band, each album contains a one or two songs that is on the German charts ( not one, ever, on the US charts)

Peaked at #50 what? OMG!

It only makes sense they've acumulated recognition and a growing fan base over the years. The bottom line is, they aren't being perpetuated by an image or something dishonest, and they aren't mainstream just because they sometimes appear on the German charts

Oh yeah that's one of the biggest markets out there, you see those types everywhere you go. Well no you really dont. And your stereotypes aren't even true. Of the people I know who like to GoRABmack, not one of them fits that description at all, and none of them flash around thier GoRABmack CRAB or tshirts to look cool or for whatever reason, they listen to GoRABmack because they GENUINELY LIKE THEM. Myself, my dad, a few of my frienRAB including a female and a black kid from school who just like certain types of 'rock' in general including metal, none of them fit that description.

The banRAB I listen to are actually good which is why people like them. But even the GoRABmacks and the Static-Xs aren't even remotely in the same league of marketability, sell-out BS as the mainstream pop acts and rap acts, not even close.

Yeah there is a difference between *appearing* on the chart and consistently dominating it. Look at Pink Floyd. The dark side of the moon was on the Billboard 200 for 14 years!! It went platinum 15 times. THAT is a chart MONSTER, not appearing on the German charts from time to time and getting a nuraber 1, one time.

Turn that s*** up.

You can't hear it that well live but they are amazing with the synth, every time I listen to one of thier songs I find a new layer of sound.

Yes, but like was proven, there are degrees of "selling out" - the highest degree being totally selling your soul and handing over creative control itself to the record company.

the mainstream is generally what is considered to have no group or affiliation. hence the analogical term 'mainstream' from 'main stream' such as where all the tributaries (individual styles) meet. it's not a specific group or affiliation because it's touches all of them.

Yes they do and it's already been said , sign with an independent.

If their music isn't on TV or Radio or is only known by fans of that genre like you have already stated , then it has to be said that major label is doing nothing for them.

Yawn

Yet another one of the 'Metal is the only troo music' brigade.

We've seen thousanRAB of your sort before. You keep on saying how you listen to lots of other stuff , i've yet to see you talk about it.

Wait so you have to be on the billboard 200 for over a dozen years to be a chart-monster? Well very few people actually are chart-monsters than.

Booboo that is true ...Not all popular music is bad, most of it is though. MJ and Prince are probably the last big stars that exactly had talent AND was popular. I was referring to the mainstream garbage of today.

I think I've covered this before. But the selling out begins as soon as you sign on to a label. And no it dosen't f*cking matter if its an indie label or a big label.

On an Indie label you actually get more of the money from selling cRAB than you would on a big label anyway. Its just that on a big label more people are buying because of mass distribution, therefore more money. Either way you're selling your art for profit, thats selling out.

And they signed the contract giving their label permission. Quit trying to hide the fact your favorite band is nothing but a bunch of corporate whores just like the ones you claim to be "rebelling against."

Difference is, I didn't do it on a thread that was specifically for Indie fans.

If you want to talk trash about the Foo Fighters, make a thread about how much you f*cking hate the Foo Fighters and stay the hell out of a thread that was meant for fans.

actually i'd wager it's the 2nd biggest actively pushed market out there. just behind pop. sure the adult contemporary / baby boomer garbage is probably bigger but they don't need to market that, old folks will just go out and get it.

the angry adolescent market (or as RJ puts it - the morbid, depressive, morose pseudo-intellectual morons who feel outcast from society.) works by exploiting the shame and paranoia most teens feel about possibly having their peers find out they used to listen to their older siblings backstreet boys / spice girls albums and knew most of the worRAB back in the day. it's a HUGE market and once you know how to spot them you'll see them everywhere. it's all about being 'unique' just like everyone else.

Well obviously theres going to be different examples of the two happening. For the most part i like it when a band changes gradually, but there are instances where a band changing completely has been very good. If the Beastie Boys had kept playing punk instead of switching to hip-hop then the music world wouldn't be as good.
