Where is the line between sell-out and talentless nobodies?

I think that we are prone to believe that the more inaccessible an artists work is the more validity it has. I don't think its really relevant to question an artist motives for creativity, even though in many cases they're easily apparent. Musicians rarely sell out. More often than not its the industry and the media that does it for them. I don't think there is a damn thing wrong with wanting to make money with what your good at. Even in music. Music fans tend to be more elitist than we care to admit to. We want artists to be popular enough to have a following but obscure enough to be esoteric. I think an artist only obligation is to his own muse and sense of artistic license. If they betray their own sense of artistic integrity then that is selling out.
 
There's nothing wrong with not being popular. I know lots of banRAB who have purposely evaded commercial success for the sake of making music on their own terms. and yes, they are VERY talented.
Selling out means changing your music or the way you approach your art for the sole purpose of making more money. period. Just because an artists changes his music doesn't mean he's sold out.
 
And? They didn't change thier sound and they don't exist to fit a commercial image, nor do they use thier music as a political label. Thier sound does not need to be compromised to be put on a t shirt or a pen. It DOES need to be compromised to be put on MTV and commercials and TV shows and commercial ringtones etc.

And what is you people's fasination with a couple of pens and some t shirts? It's not even that big of a deal, compared to...well pretty much all banRAB they hardly have any merchandise at all. They probably make beans off of those trinkets.

As I've said before, with what very little merchandise is produced with the banRAB name on it, they don't need to change thier sound over pens and shirts.

sell outs are the banRAB you used to like but now your little sister always listens to them.

the ideal spot is between when the indie snobs think a band sold out (because you know about them without their 'education') but your little sister still thinks the band sucks.

So, my advice is, sell out as soon as possible, so none of your stupid fans will ever whine about you selling out.
 
That aside sonically Radiohead went from a typical 90s alternative rock band to something different altogether that wasn't guaranteed to sell well at all. Creep is still their biggest hit anyway so I'd say from a chart point of view they haven't really gotten any bigger. I mean Nude has been their biggest hit since the 90s and it wouldn't have been if it wasn't for that remix technicality thing.
 
I've been using logic and sources and expanding upon my statements. You have not, it's pretty sad that just using their website and rateyourmusic I've managed to tell you more about your favorite band than you've told anyone. Do you have any sources to back up your entire statement I quoted? Because until then the hold thing reeks of made up argument to me. You're sturabling over your own contradictions.
