Where in Mexico should I stay? Looking for beach AND culture.?

I'm planning on taking a trip to Mexico soon (my first time there), but I don't know which city to choose. I'd prefer a city on the beach, but the big thing is that I don't want to sacrifice culture. (An overly Americanized town with nothing but resorts isn't what I'm looking for...I want to experience a real Mexican vibe).

Any suggestions?
