What's with the hate for Symbian??

I really like the idea of a form factor that is bar style with full qwerty and about a 2.6 in touch screen. I wish Nokia would jump on this. A slightly larger E72 with a capacitive touch screen running Symbian 3. Maybe about the size of the bold 9000 but slimmer (less than 15mm).

For me, its not entirely the love for symbian, but rather the love for Nokia phones. There are a few things that I'm not ready to give up yet.

Ovi maps w/free navigation. (I don't have an unlimited data plan, so this works for me)
FM transmitter
Solid hardware (everything from the call quality to camera to battery life)

If Nokia was to produce a phone with Android, WebOS, or iOS, I would look into using it if it retained the above features.

It must of happened as i have seen posted, eg Opera Mobile, saying why only doing android now when you have done S60 forever which no one uses they wrote.

what's great about nokia is they still sell unlocked phones with US 3G.... for cheap prices... so you can keep that cheap AT&T UNLIMITED data plan while all of the carriers are increasing prices and limiting data with the new phones. Even S^1 can do 90% of what anything else can do. If you feel the phone is a little sluggish, just download a custom rom and flash it. It's so easy actually.
If you want to get locked up into high prices with the carriers, maybe you can afford it and you don't care, but I love getting good deals, so I keep watching Nokia.

Name one "need" Symbian can do....Android cannot? I have been around the block with both devices and have both. I cannot find a single thing I cannot do better using the Android OS with far more choices on HOW to get it done.....Now if you want better hardware. and really need an extra 4 MP on the 12MP camera.....the N8 is the only choice...But as far as the OS goes it really is no contest...None..Nada...zilch...It's not 'hate"...its reality......and reality does bites sometimes. The only reason I see many people staying with the N8 is the Unlimited $15 data plan and somehow believing in this day and age an unlocked phone means something when most phones can be unlocked anyway. ,,,and ATT will give you the unlock code if you cannot find it yourself.

T.Bong, are you on a mission to save us from Symbian??? I find it difficult to understand why someone, that is so perfectly happy with their android phone, doesn't just go off and be happy. Instead you (and others) feel that its not good enough that you are satisfied with your choice in phone. But, that every other user, should follow your lead.

If your trying to help others, forget about saving smartphone users and go volunteer at a homeless shelter.

This is true. If Android was on a Nokia I would have bought it in a heartbeat subsidized or not.

The issue with Symbian for me is a year and a half ago it was the best OS out there for my needs. The N97 was a decent phone with many little issues. I am not sure if Android was out then because i was narrow minded and focused on Nokia and was more than willing to put up with the many flaws of the N97 because the N82 and N95s were THAT good. . IPhone was too closed for my liking all the way an up to the battery. But I liked the ease of use and fast browser (so I bought an iTouch for wifi areas as the N97 could not keep up) Now yeah Android eats up battery as any device of that magnitude will. When dual core CPUs arrive that will be more of an issue. However as long as batteries can be swapped out that is a non issue for me.
With all the issues the N97 had i would have thought the N8 would have been flawless with zero issues, lightning fast and everything in place. Nokia did not learn much in a year and a half.

Android offered an "adult" iphone like experience. Open, fast, completely customizable.....(did I say fast?) Carrier overlay is not what it used to be. Today it's more like Apps that can be tucked away....(or removed with a click of a file placed in the root directory essentially making the device vanilla.)

So why pay $500 for a device that is basically the same as it was with a "FW" update when one can get a far better, faster, completely customizable device for $150 and instead of buying insurance know one can buy another on Ebay for about $100 more than a years worth of insurance payments and deductible....? That can be unlocked with a App.....and made vanilla in less than 5 minutes....But doesn't need to be because the ATT bloatware can be tucked away if one does not want to see their app icons..

Nokia makes great hardware.....However i never needed that hardware to last more than a couple years. My plastic N95 is still running as is the N97....with lesser hardware than the N8. The N900 did not prove to be the earth shaker it was destined to be...instead a hobbyist phone...as can be the Android but with a deeper user base and far easier implementation. All I had to do was try one out knowing the N8 would not be "finished" as no N series has ever been. People are waiting for a BROWSER for the thing!!!! A browser, How can you release a phone with a crappy browser 2 years later???

Whats wrong with Symbian?....Nokia. You can call it trolling , I call it disappointed "fool me once" users who still respect the Nokia brand but not to the point of blindly pre ordering a device just because of the brand.

AS of this moment, he "flagship" Nokia IS the worst of the bunch...You Tube is not working..People are "waiting for an apparently user friendly browser, I don;t think it is hate as much as disspointment. The Iphone sucked compared to the N97 hardware and feature wise....But not in application choice or GUI...Now one can have the hardware and slick GUI features available in a far more open OS that does not have a carrier overlay that hinders the device in any way..IF ATT would have disallowed Pandora, Googe Maps and other "paid" ATT apps out of the gate before "Jailbreaking or rooting" I would have passed.... but they didn't In that regard the phone can be used any way one wants to and replace ATT' paid and data intensive apps with store apps. or use ATT...doesn't matter. ATT gave the user the choice...Apple does not. you HAVE to jailbreak an iPhone. Not so with android.

ATT does not allow certain apps that would go to the root of the device for tinkering without rooting the device which is a good thing as some people could misuse them and delete some critical processes. But one can easily root the OS less than 5 minutes and go back to stock without a trace. Again not something many will find the need to do as the GUI is fine out of the box and very iPhone like with more options. The app store AUTOMATICALLY refunds upon uninstall of a paid app within 24 hours.....Many fully functional apps are free if you don't mind a little advertising banner. The Appbrain store can sync ones apps so if you reset the device or burn a new ROM the store will automatically reinstall all paid and otherwise apps to your device. No need for iTunes it is all done OTA. IT really is an amazing OS. There are many App stores and the phone can be made to run apps from any place .Jobs thinks thats a bad thing.

Jobs has to be a little worried..........his 5 minute rant vs Android defending Apple more than indicated that.

First of all there are phones that Android can fly under the AT&T 3G radar and still use the $15 softcap.

Anywhoo... Just off the top of my head:

Symbian gives you much better battery life then Android.

Symbian doesn't have the annoying "Force close" messages that you see with Android. (Heck I sometimes get that with Google Maps so it's not a 3rd party app thing)

Before Froyo (and yes I am going there since more than half of Android phones are currently Eclair or less) Symbian beats it in flash and tethering without rooting.

Symbian does multi-tasking better. Android can only access 6 apps at a time when you press the home screen button.

You already went "hardware" and pointed out the camera thing, but I'll take a Symbian phone for GPS lock on over Android too.

* Sure I can go on the other side of the fence and make just as strong of a case for Android over Symbian, but my point is that one OS doesn't truly have a dominance over the other. They both have their flaws.

Finally I split my time right down the middle with both Symbian and Android each week, so I couldn't be any more neutral and the more important point I'm not trying to convert anyone...

LOL I was a hard core Nokia user and defender of the N97 in particular right here on this forum....I defended while many attacked...But even my higher expectations would not have been met with the N8......I had that feeling before relaease and PC Mag, Engadget and a few other non extraordiary Nokia fans have concurred,

Your post lead me to think of this....."Last one out...shut the lights" The hardest core will leave last. o hang on to an unlimited data plan whihc is likely to change is no reason to spend an extra $350 on an inferior device.

If t9 is your thing that's totally fine, but there should be an OPTION for either T9 or Portrait QWERTY.

When you are on the go and you only have one hand free, T9 IMO is too much of a chore especially if you have used SWYPE QWERTY in Portrait mode...
