What's with the hate for Symbian??

I don't think its really "hate" per say, but more of frustration (for previous symbian users at least). I've had my N97 for just a little over a year and I'm just about ready to chuck this thing against a brick wall. The only reason I haven't yet is because I'm not sure which phone to get next; and judging from the reviews and videos on youtube, the N8 may not be a viable choice for me anymore.

Symbian was great 3-4 years ago, but other OS's have caught up so much while symbian has stayed stagnant. I wish Nokia made more strides in order to make symbian better, but they haven't and frankly I'm tired of just having a really cool camera, but a not so intuitive OS. I'll probably be making the jump to android in a couple of days, and with the captivate only costing 69$ with a renewed contract on amazon its hard to turn down.

I believe that portrait qwerty became an issue after swype. According to AAS the N8 comes with a portrait qwerty but it is not "turned" one so maybe all the swypers can get that too in coming fw update. I know I will miss a physical call/off buttons but unless C7 comes to the US I guess it will do.

Portrait SWYPE is very critical IMO, but for me the biggest time that I felt the Portrait QWERTY lost/missing was on the N97. You get somebody like Opera that gives you the ability to use that in their browser and you become used to it that it just doesn't feel right not having it as an available option.

Fast forward to the N8, the lack of that option was the biggest thing "missing" for me (since I new that the knew browser wouldn't be ready). Sure anyone can use T9, but I just don't understand why Nokia didn't think that this was important option to have on a touch phone.

I really hope that they fix this by the time that the new browser drops in, because both currently missing are too much of a deal breaker for me for now. If it does get fixed I could see myself trading in my e72 for a (Dell/Amazon) special down the road...

Several top people leaving in a matter of months doesn't paint a pretty picture for what is going on within Nokia internally.

In other news, Gizmodo has stated that they will not be reviewing the N8:

http://gizmodo.com/5667723/why-were-not-reviewing-the-nokia-n8

A Nokia PR rep commented:

"Hi Matt, this is Anna from Nokia PR.

Matt, thanks for your opinion. We’re sorry you have chosen not to review the N8, and it’s ok that you don’t like our products. Millions of other people (and some of your peers at Gizmodo) like our products, but we’re happy to come pick it up from you. There are plenty of other influencers who would appreciate the opportunity to experience the N8.

As you know through various discussions with us, we are committed to the Symbian platform, which is still the world’s most widely used smartphone OS, contrary to your own viewpoint. Our newest Symbian devices are already shipping and we’ve had a record number of preorders for Nokia N8’s. You could’ve bashed the device and we would’ve been ok with it, really. We’ll just send them to people who write a review to help their audience make a decision.

Some companies might be tempted to blacklist you from future reviews, but that’s not our style. However, we have decided to give this N8 away to a lucky consumer – learn how by following @Nokia on Twitter."

I don't think I've ever actually witnessed a tech blog not review a device from the largest (insert specific segment here) manufacturer in the world.

I tried to do swype qwerty in portrait mode on my 5800, wasnt comfortable using and pretty much needed the stylus to use, and without swype accuracy wasnt too good and kept miss typing, but even on hardware qwerty, I felt slower than on screen t9.

Only issue I had with the nokia t9, was the dictionary was lacking and just had to add words, but I was faster typing that way.

And I find t9 quite easy to use with one hand, actually I no issue using using an alpha numeric keypad without t9 with one hand also...just dont use non t9 without touch screen, thats a lot harder to do

X10 doesn't really have a great keyboard. I hate to say it but nobody has really done a normal touchscreen keyboard as well as apple, though the iPhone would be easier to use because its screen is wider than the N8 screen. (in case T Bong shows up swype works a little differently so it isn't part of that statement)

Im a little confused myself, it could definitely improve but its still ok.

Its not HORRIBLE as people are making it out to be.

Not everything different is bad. Right now all the newer OSs are similar and I think this is the problem.

Frankly all the apps on my N95 are great for me and some have no alternative on competing platforms.

Therefore, its no wonder I am/was contemplating buying another brand new N95.

However, ive been a smartphone user since the Nokia 3650 so.....

Both iPhone's and HTC's Sense soft keyboards work very, very well, for me at least. Nokia, it's okay to copy. Really. If an idea works, use it.

The company obviously didn't have a problem with using a Coverflow-type UI in their music player, why did they stop short in one of the most important input methods on a smartphone, the keyboard?

In fact, one could argue that the keyboard is used to communicate MORE than voice. The other big thing missing that nobody mentions is multi touch on the keyboard. On a software keyboard, that's a pretty huge omission.

The new symbian 3 looks marvelous!! Nokia is also working on meego to start progressing the platform as well. I like symbian and don't have a problem with it.
