What's with the hate for Symbian??

Why are so many people bashing or hating on symbian?? I think symbian is an okay OS if you ask me. Yes it is old and can use some upgrades and all. I'm a symbian user as a nokia fan and I happen to find the OS very reliable and simple to you use.

I see all this hype about android this and android that. But when I tried it, yeah it was impressive. But it's damn sure not reliable being such a powerful OS that it drains the battery so easily. Atleast Symbian takes it easy on your phones battery.

Now if you were to ask me is Android alot better and more open and sexier and flashier than symbian?? Yes it is, symbian I do believe can use some upgrades. Especially our app store cause it sucks. Android to me is just a flashy OS with a great market ability being shoved down our throats from various networks and brands here in America. So what's the hate about? It's still the world's leading OS even though Android isn't far from it though.
 
I don't understand it either. It seems many people feel they have to defend their reason getting a new brand or a carrier subsidized phone, some seem to have some personal reasons. I think Nokia makes solid phones but if I could buy a phone with AT&T 3G, US warranty and no overlay like HTC sense or whatever SE uses and if the price was decent I would try an Android. Unfortunately I can't since the Nexus for AT&T 3G is not for sale anymore. I will get an Android tablet and probably the N8. Some of the haters are definitely trolls or 12 years old. If you get a new phone fine, I don't give a damn. Move on. That's what I would do.
 
It may also have to do with the fact that Nokia is an international company whereas Android and Apple are american based companies.

I personally love symbian and think it works great. I know based on all the reviews I have seen the N8 has made great headway and we have upcoming updates which will resolve browser issue. Swype just got released as well.

Symbian was easily brushed off before in terms of touch interface but now they are getting better and it is possible people are worried there american based companies won't be number one.
 
I obviously don't hate it since I still use it but the big three complaints that I hear the most are: Outdated (and/or clunky) UI, Signed App Issues, Not open like Android, Maemo, Meego.


IMO it's a very stable and reliable OS, and hopefully more people jump on board for app support... :)
 
Just a note, I don't think any of the people that troll here are "worried" that nokia will beat an american based company. Most of them are ex-nokia users and if nokia had an equivalent/better product, they'd be using that.

It's getting better but it still has some ways to go IMO
 
I dont hate Symbian, i hate how Nokia has dragged it through the dirt, if it wasn't for the N97 f*#k up i would have stayed, no doubt. If the N97 just had 256mb RAM, 512mb ROM, a graphics accelerator and stable software, i would be rocking that right now. I miss the days where Nokia Nseries phones were just so far ahead in almost every way: CPU, GPU, Camera, Display, OS, Apps, Games, Web browsing etc... The days of the N95 and E90. The N8 is close but it missed its time IMO, no doubt its a great phone and will sell, but i feel THIS is the killer-phone Nokia should have released last year, it would have killed the Satio and OmniaHD, kept the majority of us in Symbian and would have attracted plenty more devs, maybe its just me who feels that way, but now im done with Symbian, and yes im on Android, but if Nokia had done things right last year i doubt we'd be having this convo.
 
Could be that:

1) It is evil (unlike some other companies that we know aren't, because the tell us)
2) It stole the boyfriend/girlfriend/lollipop of someone
3) People confuse it with Sybian, which may in turn be linked to number 2 above (although I would imagine even a lollipop would not stick)
 
If you have been a dedicated Nokia/Symbian user over the past 4 years, its hard not to be bitter. The N95/N82, put Nokia at the top when it comes to hardware. But, the smartphone market has grown so fast since the release of the iphone, it feels like Nokia/Symbian have been passed by. The best example I can give is my recent purchase of a Palm Pre Plus. By comparison, I entered my email name and password once into the Palm. From there it setup my email and synced all of my google contacts and calendar events. To do the same thing on my current N86 (and the E72) it takes multiple steps to complete process. And even, then it may not work properly.

It just seems that Nokia makes things harder than they need to be.

I will be curious to see what Nokia does in the next year. I want to stick with Nokia. The hardware and build quality is excellent.
 
After posting so many anti-Nokia articles, Gizmodo now has a great piece on the Nokia 1100, the most successful mobile phone ever sold, and what's going to be the next mega seller.

I think most people were hurt from their "flagship" N97 becoming a gigantic failure of a phone. Then 10 months later, in order to "fix" the situation, Nokia releases a "kind of" stable, smaller and less featured version of the N97, called it the mini, and slapped on an even higher price tag. It was an absolute waste of everyone's time and money, and pissed off a lot of loyal Nokia users including myself.

Now that Nokia has finally figured out that when you stuff more features into a phone, you need more RAM and memory. The N8 is finally released. So far, it seems to be the stablest Symbian powered Nokia I've held since my E61i. The 680Mhz ARM11 CPU and 256mb of RAM although may not sound like much to the Andorid/iPhone crowd but with symbian, it's more than enough and it is a significant upgrade from the N97. A friend of mine who was fortunate to be one of the first to receive their N8 was able to run over 25 applications at once when first testing the phone. I remember on the N97 and N97 mini, maybe 5-8 programs could be ran at once, depending on how long the phone has been turned on and how big the programs were; Then the phone would reboot or freeze. The N8 is what the N97 series should have been.
 
What i hate even more is when a program is made for symbian and not another platform and all the trolls come out from under their bridge and say why symbian and not others, its a dying platform anyway.

until I read this thread, I didn't realize how much of a fanboy I had become. I keep coming up with excuses to stay on the nokia upgrade path. It seems like I can find a flaw in every android phone offered. There needs to be a grail device to knock me out of this..
 
While I understand that some people don't like Symbian or does not prefer it.

But "hate" like you said is what I don't understand either. It's like Symbian killed a family member of theirs and they make an extra effort in forums and blogs to diss symbian and its users. Have you seen the comments in GSM-arena?

that said, there are also rabid haters of other OSs although probably not that loud.
 
Whatever... I split time right down the middle each week with both S60 and Android.


Here's a little secret, "They both have their flaws". (all phones do)


Seriously don't let the users wearing the "Haters gotta hate" t-shirts in this thread persuade you one way or another. Your needs are different than theirs...
