What will Bell do with the new Nimiq 5 satellite?

There is no true On Demand for ANY Satelitte service.

DircTv and Dish do offer a Somewhat On Demand service.

I doubt Bell would even consider using Nimiq 5 for this, if they were to ever bring something like this on-line, it would be on the MAIN bird, not a secondary one, it would use the 91 degree slot.

Nimiq 5 has two antennas system; one for canadian coverage and the other for USA coverage, that can be programmed by transponder.
So it can ultimately be used for canadian use, if needed.

I think Bell Expressvu knows what it's doing. I sure they reshearched this stuff before they they pay $500 million to launch a satillite into space.

Signal strength to the west coast from 72.5 shouldn't be an issue as long as the antennas on the satellite are designed to provide coverage properly. Look angle...well there's no much that can be done about that.

Really, there's at least three options:
1) Dish 1000 type set-up looking at all three satellites
2) Eastern canada gets served by 72.5 and 82, western canada by 82 and 91
3) BEV doesn't use it at all for their own subs and leases the capacity to DTV.

But Mike will it be to late? People want the channels and service now, that is the reality. Yes Arr is a one man wrecking crew, I think he secretly has alot of Bell stock.

EV is currently planning on using 16 transponders at 72 and 16 at 129. That will be enough for regional services while keeping national services on 91 and 82.

oksat is coorect about the 9 degree spacinf for DBS satellites...for now at least. They're trying to get the FCC to approve 4.5 degree spacing...for obvious reasons.

there are no laws against providing service to the US from a Canadian slot, or vice versa. As long as the proper approvals are granted from the FCC and/or Industry Canada. In fact, 72.5 is a Canadian slot but is currently being used by Direct TV and 118.7, where Anik F3 is located, is being utilized by Echostar.

It was mentioned somewhere that Ciel-2 will launch later this year into the (Canadian) 129 slot. Dish has leased 16 transponders there as well, but it doesn't mention where the other 16 will be used. That could serve the West.

Note

So to answer the original question asked long ago "What will Bell do with the new Nimiq 5 satellite?"

The answer is nothing!

Is that in fact confirmed, or is it still speculation? I haven't read anything official regarding BEV using Ciel-2.

Nimiq 5 Scheduled for Launch on September 18, 2009.

I wonder what this will mean to us BellTV folks?

I strongly disagree. Out here in BC interior, *C is at 30/32 degree (elevation that is), 91 is at 27, and 82 at 21. I haven't done the math or looked it up yet but that should put 73 around 14-15 degree at best. Half as high as the other guys. I don't even send my staff on BEV installations because 82 is so hard to get out here. I do them myself as I am more experienced/confident (stupid !?!). They are more productive on the STAR installations.

If some most watched channels end up on 73 only, I won't even bother trying to get the customer to cut trees, put a tripod on his roof, move the neighbor's house or explain that the satellite is not really in our sky but at the horizon. Money is better on the other side anyway.

BEV is definitly not my favorite provider but I still would find it sad that a company would put themselves in that situation. In any case, it is just speculations at the moment. Where I am from, they say that rain is coming when the birds are flying low. Might mean lots of rainy days coming up for Beverly

you can speculate all you want right now but until they get these birds into orbit and they function we can only guess what will happen. lets face it the last new bird to enter service was nimiq 2 and that partially failed within days of launch. wait for them to get the wings unfurled first then speculate.

nimiq 4 will replace a bird at 82 then nimiq 5 will slot into 73 isn't there already something there now.? 72 will be lower in the sjy for people on the west coast so it could be a problem for signal levels lets face it with 2 birds at 82 the west coast struggles now.

OK, so if I am reading this right none of the transponders on Nimiq 5 will be used by Bell TV for the life of the satellite.:( Will they speed up the mpeg 4 transition instead. They must be exchanging N5 bandwidth for equipment and software smart cards etc.

It offically ends when N5 arrives at 72.7, but I am sure DirecTV will transition its customers from that orbital location prior to that date.

Has Bell replaced one of their satellites yet this month (Feb)? If so, which one 91 or 82? If not, when? I am hoping for a stronger signal on 82 and that replacing the 82 bird may help.

Yea, they will get right on that just like Shaw Direct is doing too lol!

Hold you breath, wait a while and repeat...

Don't expect any new bandwidth until late 2011 or 2012 at the earliest.
