What will Bell do with the new Nimiq 5 satellite?

Any 3 DBS circular polarity dish will work using the correct skew. 72 is actually 72.7 so 9 degree spacing is good enough. Both Dish and DirecTV have dishes with 9 degree spacing that will handle this and there are third party solutions as well. Dish also has switches that will work for EV. 129 is an issue but a second dish will resolve that. I'm guessing EV will put Western Canada only stations (such as locals, MC and regional sports) on that. 72.7 would be good for TMN, regional sports and some east coast and Quebec locals. I'm guessing that Toronto and Vancouver HD locals will be available nationally but other HD locals will not. (There will be no time shifting or out of market OTA stations if CAB gets its way.) Many stations OTA stations that are outside large cities may be digital SD, not HD, after 2011 so that wouldn't be much of a loss.
 
Tom, Dishnet is using all the transponders on CEIL. Transponders 1-15 are for locals across the US and 16-32 are for Conus.
 
It most probally right now will end up at 72.5 or at least that's what I hear. Because the cost of shifting the other satelites is too expensive, and if something goes wrong could be devastating.
 
That is never going to happen. Are you kidding me, us watching american commericals?!?! Whats that:eek: Bell would have to bring all the signals down to their facility, tamper with it, make it crappy and shoot it back up for us the canuks... ahah anywho, the use of 129 is garbage, its way to far, need somethin gat around 99 for it to make sense with the addition for 72.5 in late 2009.
 
Ya, that is because that document is a year and a half old and it even says that Expressvu had intended to take over the 72.5 that is being used by DirecTV now in advance of N5 getting to 72.5.
 
what will happen with nimiq 5, ok i know i am dreaming. i ask this before, but why not bring the true on demand service. They are able to bring superchannel interactive for us to program our record timer.
Directv has already the on demand service and you should see the list of channel.
I was reading a couple of reply, and hopefully they will add more hd channel for the fans of hd and perhaps, more French hd, more movies hd...that will be nice. with all that, i will upgrade to hd.
 
The "something around 99" is actually 101W used by Direct TV. As far as I know, the circular polarity birds have to be spaced by 9 degrees. No hope there unfortunately.
 
Well all I can say is 72.5 is looking like a pretty useless option for us folks out here in the west. So unless they plan to do 72.5\82 East and 82\91 West,, then maybe thing can work out then. But by doing that,, it really doesnt help get any additional bandwidth and on top of that, it would mean that every customer with BEV would need to repoint their dish.. Ouch.
 
Not a bad idea, but not really a National plan when their are French pockets outside of Quebec.

I can't speak for Cogeco, but when I took Shaw Cable from 4 digital centres to 99% of homes past by cranking out digital headends on a weekly basis, all I can say is the smiles on the faces of the locals in Digby N.S. , Hinton AB and many others were pretty darn impressed to have the same latest technology as Calgary and Edmonton.

Perhaps if your are licensed as a National carrier and can't deliver the goods, then you forfeit your licensee or we welcome others that can.

Just look at the orbital slots that DN has from 61.5 to 148 and beyond.

Of course the more central 107/111 combo is pretty deadly from coast to coast.
Now THATS a National service.
 
the other issue for those of us out West (in Vancouver area) is going to be accessing the signal

I have a slope to the east which will threaten even getting my dish into the path of the signal, as it will be coming in about 10degrees lower
This will cut off a number of subscribers who arent in a position to move their local hill or trees

Also signal strength may be an issue here, as 82 is more difficult to get a strong signal on than 91, I assume this problem will further apply

No way man,, you cant be putting channels out 72 for the west costs,, its just too damn far to be used with a Dish1000 setup. A Dish500 with 82\91 is already borderline acceptable,, sure if you slap 2 dishes one at 82 and one at 91 its perfect,, but forget about tripple lnb out here. Bev needs to hook up with Direct and aquire some space at 99.
 
Here is a possiblity:

East

- 72.5 (16 transponders) carries locals in the East
- 82/91 national coverage

West

- ??? (16 transponders from an Dishnetwork satellite) carries local channels in the west
- 82/91 national coverage

They give up 16 transponders on 72.5 but gain them back on another bird from Dishnetwork. Gives proper coverage for both East and West.

Just a theory.
 
Since Maillardville sits on a hill facing southeast, they shouldn't have any trouble finding 72. I think the rest of the western Francophone communities could also find this satellite, if they really needed to, so it would still be national. Some couldn't but that is also true for 82 and 91 if you have trees or other objects in the way. Even if they do have a problem, the small percentage of Francophones out west shouldn't be more important than the English Canadians out here.
 
Most people on the West coast will have no trouble with Nimiq 5. ARR just likes to spread FUD in his never ending quest to bring down BELL.

The reality is that this year we'll have a brand new satellite at 82, and next year there will be a brand new satellite at 72.5 with a total transponder capacity of 96. I wonder how Starchoice is going to keep up with that (i.e. when is there next satellite launching?).

signal strength wont be a problem..a brand new satellite will always have great range and power compared to the older ones.

I think this is a move to give people more HD capacity and possibly allow Bell to offer alot more international programming.

it wont be 10 degrees lower..but 10 degrees to the west. If you catch 82 now, 72 would be right there also.
 
Yes its disappointing but I wouldn't say Bell has no plans.

A lot has changed since the first Nimiq 5 announcement was made including a failed takeover, new CEO, a worldwide recession, LIPF, FFC, increased HD requirements and so on.

I think the new management at Bell is better than the old and more customer focused so without knowing all the details, its tough to pass judgement.
