Queen Elizabeth I was the queen of England at the time. She governed cautiously and the period is widely viewed as a golden age. It is known for a growth of English theatre not only of Shakespeare but Marlowe and adventurers such as Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh.
She was known for religious moderation and for being politically astute. English citizens were much poorer than today and disease was rife. However, England enjoyed strong economic growth with London growing by 400% to 200,000 in the 1600's.
