What was your GAP year experience like before college?

Have you done this before? What was your experience like.....what did you do and did it benefit you in the long run?

I am deferring at a university to do this. I was rejected from my first choice university this year (Brown University), so this would also be another opportunity to apply there early decision. In a way, though, I am actually no longer disappointed at getting rejected because it really opened me up to the possibility of taking a gap year which I would never have considered before. Now, it just seems like an amazing opportunity to see the world, even though I am blowing my entire savings to do it, but it definitely seems worth it! And I will definitely have a back up for a college/scholarship as I am deferring.

As of right now, I am applying to do a program through an organization known as WAVA in which I will tutor english to host family in Spain for 15 hours a week in exchange for room and board. I want to do this for about 6-8 months and then I am planning to backpack across Europe for 2-3 months. I am hoping to become fluent in Spanish while in Spain which would also really benefit me with my major also (International Relations). I am also planning on going to Thailand to take a 1 week long scuba diving certification course and then backpack across thailand and a few other parts of southeast asia for 2-3 weeks (depending on my money supply).

So what did you do for a GAP year and are you glad that you did it?

Thought I should add - I would not have a problem entering college a year later. I know for some people if you take a year off, its hard to get the motivation to go back. But please do include this as a reason not to do it. In fact, do not tell me I shouldn't do it....i asked this question a while ago and these are all the answers I got. I believe that it will benefit me and will help me with my major and further my passion for my intended area(s) of study. I love school and studying and would be taking this gap year to learn more about myself, a different culture/language, explore the history of Europe that I have spent the past 10 years learning about only through a textbook, and help me with my prospective major. So I know 100% that I will be going to school a year later.

Thanks so much!
