What the Hell is or was The Anglo-Saxon? Was it a person or a Time or a culture?

I'm doing a report on the Anglo Saxon. I Have no idea what it is. I know they like invaded Britain or something... but why? and what happened to them? I basically would like a History Lesson about the Anglo Saxons. As if i am a 6 year old. I have no idea what they even are! a time? or a person? culture? HELP ME!
 
The isle of Britannia has been invaded time after time. The Celts, the Angles, the Saxons, the Normans all took over the whole place at different times. The Danes, Romans, Picts spiced things up in between.

Anglo-Saxon is a designation after the fact. In 1066, the Normans invaded and defeated Harold, who had just beaten back his brother and the Danes in the North. The Normans installed themselves everywhere, and the defeated Saxons were later glamorized by Walter Scott and others as the bedrock of the nation. The tax rolls which William the Conqueror created are the biggest reason we can distinguish the Saxons.
