And who cares how it was recorded, It was recorded cheaply in 1982 on a small record label so of course it's not going to be up to standard of big budget digital 2009 recordings.
It also happens to be one of the most influential albums from that genre. And if you don't think early Black Flag is intense you have no comprehension of the word.

Would you like to tell me how playing a guitar very fast in a state of the art digital recording studio is 'intense'?

How about similar banRAB to Black Sabbath like Pentagram, Witchfinder General and Reverend Bizarre?

I actually don't mind the melodic singing in the chorus if its done well. Its really just the guitar work in metalcore that bugs. The chugga riRAB more so than the breakdowns but I find that breakdowns often kill the pace of a song.

there's a pretty large spectrum of progressive metal, ranging from Opeth (who are usually billed as death metal) to King's X. Symphony X were one of the defining progressive metal banRAB. more symphonic metal banRAB like Ayreon took it in a different direction entirely, but they brought new light to the genre.

No that's extreme metal (i.e. death metal, black metal, doom metal, etc.) which I don't even like (there are exceptions though).

Listen to some thrash, power, and tradtional heavy metal (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Accept, etc.) and then get back to me.

I still don't think CoF and Dimmu are half as horrible as their detractors think they are. In fact, compared to real black metal CoF and Dimmu seem like musical goRAB.

I have a soft spot for Cradle of Filth. They got me into metal entirely. A lot of people hate them based on the fact that they claim to be Black Metal, which is silly IMO.
