What does 50 watt x 4 mean? Does that mean each channel can only use up to 50 watts? And somebody told me that under powering a speaker damages it more than overpowering it, is that true? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Yes, it means each channel (if you hook up four speakers, etc) will output 50 watts to the devices. You can also hook two subs up to this amp in a parallel circuit and the subs would each get 100 W instead. Overpowering a speaker is a misleading term because an amp that is rated over the speaker's requirements only has the POTENTIAL to give the speakers that much power, it isn't necessarily giving them all that power all at once. On the other hand, if a speaker requires more power than the amp even has potential to give it, this damages the speaker since it will be doing too much work with too little wattage to back it up. Does that make sense?
