what should i do with old receivers?

I have added receivers to my account in the past. If you know the name and address of the previous account holder, which theOP does, it might just be possible if you work the call in a specific way.
 
Dispose of them one way or another and send the bill to the previous home owners for getting rid of their garbage.

I have always hated that. If you're moving out take ALL your garbage with you. I don't want it.

It is unlikely that the 24 receivers were actually registered to the previous owner of the house :)

How he (orignal home owner) got them and why he had them is certainly questionable.
 
Kind of off topic, but can't you use these receivers to convert OTA signals to digital for older TVs that don't have the built-in digital receivers?

He can't, he is not the legetimate owner of those receivers and can not, therefore, autorise the transfer of those receivers



I think that would be is better option...
Bell won't give him a dime for the machine, but will give him the trouble to go all the way to the post office. They will refurbish these units and use them to replace broken units of client's who have Dish Care
 
Long time ago I heard that there was a conversion to make an old RCA DirecTV DSS receiver to become a true FTA receiver (i.e. legal Free To Air, not pirate), and that was very interesting. I wish something like this could be done on Bell receivers but guess it's unlikely. (Given that a true FTA receiver is no longer expensive these days, not like in the past).
 
yeah all 24 receivers have $$$ owed to them i called bell.

so if i give them back to bell they will just resell(refurb) them? and if i sell it on ebay only people that want to do illegal things will want them(people who want to sub it won't be allowed to)?

There are MANY, MANY leagal uses for these IRDs, IF someone "owned" them! Remember whoever decides to do things with them must "own" them, not just have possession!
 
First of all the agent was not even supposed to tell you whether there was a balance owing or not on the receiver since you are not the legetimate owner of the receiver, and your name is probably not on the account.

Yes, if you call Bell they will probably ship you boxes with sticker paying for the post fee, but they won't pay you anything for the receivers since you are not the legetimate owner. They will refurbish the receiver and ship them to people who have a broken receiver and that suscribe to dish care, their extended warranty. They could also use them for rentals.

Nobody will be able to use those receivers legally since it is impossible to have the "owner'" call in and say he has given away the receiver. Since there is no note on the account stating so those receivers can't therefore be activated legally, so they are only good to those who wants to use pirate cards to steal signal.
 
ExAgent go back and reread the post! Your response was incorrect.

He said that someone with an existing Bell account could do the Shaw satwinback and give Shaw one/two/three of those "used" receivers instead of one of their own good working usable receivers. Therefore they lose nothing in the satwinback!!! That is as long as the owner "gives" them or sells them to anyone (minus the smartcard which Bell owns).

I am only referring to the IRD, NOT the smartcard which Bell retains the ownership to no matter what.
 
yes but i beleve if someone calls in to have one of these IRD's activated then they will have to provide the serial number of the IRD which the Smartcard ( non-existent in this case) is tied to.
 
It was possible to do that on the Dishnetwork 301 (rev 013) although I'm not sure how far they got with this project.
 
If the original owner does not want them (i.e. the person who sold the house), then it is one thing, if he just forgot them it is a different story. Call first and ask.

Not true that only "hackers" want old unusable or broken IRDs... some repair shops may be interested for components. I know I used to do some work on the 2700, 3100, 3700 & 4700s and was always looking for parts that were inexpensive. Stop assuming everyone buying receivers off fleabay etc are crooks.

I got a large collection of old IRDs for $25 once and scavenged a couple of hundred worth of repairs out of them then fired them off to the recyclers.
 
Just thought of another use for those old, balance owing receivers!!!

Sell them to people who want to do a Shaw/Rogers/etc Satellite WinBack! You can get an HDPVR from them for free if you trade in "your" old sat IRD!!!

Another NONE hacker use for old Bell equipment!!!
 
So this guy would buy a new receiver every month and rack up $2000 worth of porn on it... then buy a new receiver and do the same the next month on a new account I would guess?. That's the funniest thing I've heard all day!

So your telling me if the owner calls Bell and tells them he sold it they can activate it??????

I don't think that's how it works. I think HE MUST PAY WHAT HE OWES BEFORE HE CAN SELL IT. Or am I wrong?

these guys pay like $40-$60 per receiver and then use it for 2.5 months...

not bad if u ask me...min is $35 per month plus tax and that includes only basic service...so they don't lose any $$$ on the receivers

EDIT: btw there was around 37 recievers total(found some more in the attic) I sold them all on ebay...made some very nice coin...who knows if i sold them to hackers on not but 32 buyers gave me a +rating though....i am just glad i sold all these receivers i had no use for them
 
Good for you.

It is very odd that there is still a thriving market for used Bell Receivers when they are only around $100 new but hey, thats fine with me. I think I will dig out my old pile and get them listed.
 
^^^the reason for that is because you GET NO CONTACT BUYING USED

you will have to pay $35 SOMETIMES...most agents waive it if you threaten to not activate with Bell


btw I only got $50-$70 US per reciever including shipping except for the pvrs which I got $170-$190 US plus $25 US shipping
