what should i do with old receivers?

oh really if that's the case then nevermind i was under the impression he had to pay what he owed first

EDIT: i will call Bell tommorow to see if that is correct...but i can't see Bell letting the previous owner sell the reciever without paying his balance FIRST

I bought a new home and the previous owner left 14 4100's, 8 3100's and 2 5900's. I can post pics if you guys think I am lieing. Anyways he told me to throw them away because they all have balances on them. He said you can't sell them because BEV won't activate them because $$$ is owed.

So what should I do? Throw them away? But it is such a waste to throw them all away IMO.

Send them back to BEV? This is the most ethical thing to do I think.

I won't lie I tried selling them on ebay(I let people know $$$ is owed and you won't be able to activate it) and only got around $15. Not worth it to sell it because shipping is like $10 + ebay fees.

well im sure he would have to pay the balence before they deactivate them for him but still

Buyers on eBay typically pay the shipping. You can also add reasonable handling fees to cover packaging materials and other costs. You will get dinged a buck or two for listing and paypal fees but that is minimal with some types of listings. With 24 receivers @ $15, that still ends up being about $300 profit. You can list and get paid in US$ as well. I have heard of people getting receivers with balances activated. With 24 of them, you don't stand much chance though. I have to wonder what that guy was up to. He must have some expensive PPVs on those receivers.

^^^exactly

that's what he told me...he says he owes between $800-$2,000 on each receiver

so i guess i will just throw them away tommorow morning before work(i have no time to sell them on ebay anyways)

i will keep the 2 pvrs though(take out the hard drive)

I think he is exagerating somewhat. $800 to $2000 per receiver is just not possible.

If it is, I would like to know how.!!

I would call Bell and offer up a couple of the receiver #'s, see what bell tell you about selling them.

It might also be the case that they are rental units. Bell will tell you.

Another point is that if they do not have the current Smart Cards (start with S06****), they will have to be issued new Cards before they be activated.

Pretty much useless (since you can't contact the original owners to get them released), but I'd do as Pinza suggests, call Bell. If they want them, then they will (should) send you boxes to send them back in and cover the cost. Worst case, you can strip the hard drives out of the 5900s and use them in your computer.

After reading the original message more carefully i'm editing my response...

The receivers could only be resold to someone who wishes to use them illegally, not because there is an amount owed but because since you are not the legitimate owner of the receivers in Bell's record you can't autorise the transfer to a new owner so the person you will be selling it to won't be able to activate it

You could always call Bell, who will ship you boxes to send them back, but they won't pay you the amount they give when they are buying back receivers since you are not the legitimate owner of the receivers

^^^^ppv's, nhl center ice, nfl sunday ticket, porn and lots of it...i have a few bills from collection agencies (i guess he didn't forward them his new address) and one say he owes OVER $2,000 , another says he owes OVER $1,000, one is over $800

can i post them????

The buyer will be able to activate the receiver whithiut a problem. The balance follow the account (client) not the receiver

New procedure??? That policy was in place when I started at Express Vu April 2006!!!

When a receiver is sold the owner must call Bell TV and let them know he sold the unit. The agent (if he does is job properly) SHOULD 1) remove an a/o (little code in their system that allows all the additionnal receivers to receive programming) AND 2) put a note on the account of the seller that unit has been sold, and, if possible the name of the new owner AND if the buyer has an account with Bell TV a note on his account too. That note should at least include the receiver and/or the smartcard number. When the buyer calls to activate the receiver, the agent enters the receiver number as a search criteria. He then gets the account of the buyer. He just look at the notes to see if there is a note stating that the receivers have been sold. If that's the case the agent just open the account of the buyer (or creates one if required) and proceed the transfer, regardless of the balance owed. Bell TV will still go after the seller to get their money and it's the seller (since he is the one who created the debt) that will be sued in collection if required

I'm not aware of how Shaw operates (since they are not offered in my region), but woudn't they verify first if the receivers indeed belong to their future client?

If you can't sell them for whatever reason, but still need to get rid of them, there is always the Ontario Electronic Stewardship program that came into effect at the beginning of April. Your city should have some kind of provision in their charter or an electronics recycling depot nearby to allow you to dispose of all your unwanted electronics.

That sound like the 2 crazy brother's that we calling numerous times everyday...if I recall one was in the West and one in the East. They had numerous receivers and were ordering pron, suscribing to all sports packages and so on... They were never paying their bills, so after 2-3 months their account was getting disconnected. They must had a friend working in the connection departement cause even with a previous very deliquentaccount they were always managing, a few days before the disconnection to re-open a brand new account on the same name, same telephone number, same adress

I don't think so, well not if they operate like Rogers.

I have dozens of Bell receivers that were handed into Rogers Technicians during their "Ditch the Dish" promo. All the Techs had to give the Rogers office was a Smart Card, so I got literally dozens of receivers, from 2700's to 6100's including 5900's etc.

Indeed diff. possible solutions and not everything else must be illegal, ease up people.

I am not sure if the Shaw win back offer requires a statement from Bell though, if so then he can't use it like that, but still may be someone who has current Bell account could use them, but not give back the actual (on same account) receivers and thus use these as substitutes (drones?).

Another use of course is for repair for those who have skills in electronics. Bell only has 1 year warranty so who would service them? Bell has never offered a repair service per se (not counting the refurb swap). I once had a friend's co-worker's 3100 which had a blown power supply, which my friend can't fix despite swapping out a few components already. Would have been nice to have a working one to swap components with instead, of course.

The 5900 one can pull out the IDE HDD although the value of these are next to little these days as HDD price has plummeted.

The OP didn't say if remote controls were included, because this is actually the most sort after parts / accessories because people damage them, loose them, or just want a spare. I'm sure the remote will sell very well.

Some parts inside might be useful for some electronics hobbyists, also, for projects etc. Not necessary illegal stuff. e.g. the transformer in the modem circuitry is very useful for noise isolation in an audio chain connecting digital domain and analog domain. Things like that.

Just some ideas.

Actually those drives are worth quite a bit as they have to be an exact match to the firmware on Bell's receivers and are not easy to find on the open market.

Impossible... The owner has to call in to autorise the transfer to another account. Since the OP is not the owner of the receiver he can no autorise the transfer. That rule applies even if the owner's account is deactivated

I would stack them all up nicely on the curb on a nice day and let people take them. One mans garbage may be anothers treasure.

Pinza,

I am in the wrong business! Best I could do was give a guy $10 for a box of ancient Blackbird IRDs which I handed out to family & friends for the Shaw offer. Didn't want to give away good working Bell IRDs!!!
