300 is exactly right and fine for your printer.
You could probably go down to 200 or 240 PPI and not see a big difference. (You'd have smaller files and be able to make larger prints).
In general:
Photos: 240-300 PPI
Charts etc. : 150-200 PPI
Text: 100-150PPI
Your medium is important too! Cheap paper absorbs more ink and high PPI will make things blurry as the ink mushes together.
News Print: 100 PPI (don't bother printing on this from a regular printer)
Plain Paper: 150 PPI or less
Matte Paper: 300 PPI or less.
Glossy Paper: 300 PPI or more.
EDIT: Also, the viewing distance matters too. If people will get 2 feet away or closer then go with a higher PPI like 240 or 300. If people will be 3-6 feet away you can easily get away with 200 PPI and if they will be more than 6 feet away just use 150.
