what one film would make you invest in blu-ray - if any ?

I agree- thats why I bought one - it is definitely the best value combo of features and price on the Bluray market - but the guy was asking for a lower price without Bluray- he seems to forget that PS3 games are on Bluray discs too

But as a non gamer the XMB ,Bluetooth remote and the unlikeliness of it ever being multiregion was what made it always a stopgap for me

"Dying format"?

Are you for real?

DVD is here to stay and Bluray will never usurp it - I'm a Bluray fan and I will wager that dvd will still be here long after Bluray is superceded

DVD's are cheap because the format is such a success .

Having said that- new release UK dvd's are not cheap compared to Bluray prices.

The Indiana Jones Bluray was

DVRAB seem to play fine on my frienRAB massive screen television and massive projector screens too at college... but then, I don't think many people will have giant television screens big enough to ruin the dvd experience.

DVRAB dying out made me laugh. The things will be around for a longgggggggg time. Not going anywhere.

No doubt the credit crunch will extend the life span of DVD by a good 5 years or so but it is obsolete technology.

As a format it has peaked & is in decline.

Blu-ray probably won't see it off but it is the first nail in the coffin.

The writing was always on the wall when they started giving DVRAB away free in newspapers.

Not only did that devalue intellectual property it also devalued the format itself.

I wont buy a blue-ray disc. Yes I have a PS3 and no not one single Blu Ray movie disc has been in the drive yet [nearly two years I have had my machine now]. I own all the movies I want on DVD and any future movies I want will be on DVD as well. For starters it's cheaper. And there is nothing wrong with DVD's picture quality. The quality Blu-Ray gives is not going to effect the content of the disc [the movie and extras they will be the same as the standard DVD version, maybe less] so why pay more for just a sharper picture. I could buy two or three [maybe more] DVD's for the price of one Blu Ray.

Even if DVD has reached it's peak as a format (they all do) it still massively outsells blu-ray on the whole, you make it sound like DVD is in VHS's position, it's simply not.

Blu-ray has about as much chance of dying out as dvd does at this point in time, probably more chance, atleast DVD still has mass market appeal.

I've said it before but when I can pick up films like Hellraiser 6, Poltergeist 3, Phantasm IV for

I was awol over xmas :D Yes, I know! My son got a PS3 for Xmas, and it said on the box that it's DVD compatible - However, they weren't to start off with, I remember the fuss. Also, the manager of my local Blockbusters thinks like I did, that they still aren't, I must tell her :D

I rented Wall E on Blu-Ray to have a look at, but I don't have an HD TV so I can't really tell if the pic is a lot better or not, and to be honest, I still don't care. The DVD pic is plenty good enough for me.

The extras on the Blu-Ray were just more of the usual rubbish that you find on DVD, so there's really no reason for me to switch.

If your Sony amp has additional digital inputs you would connect the Bluray player to it for 5.1 sound.

Most all in ones dont have extra inputs which is why its a mistake to buy them as it makes any upgrading difficult.

If you play games then the PS3 is a good idea - if you are only into movies then standalones have now reached the point where you can buy a multiregion player cheaper than the PS3
- I got a Panasonic player for

Studios are interested in profit margins though.

A DVD costs about 50p to produce so if the likes of Asda are flogging them for 3 quid the profit margin is squeezed even with a large volume of sales.

Blu-ray was introduced to boost profits & occupy the position DVD held in the home entertainment market 10 years ago as an aspirational item.

Lawrence of Arabia , 2001 , I would like a blue ray player , but I haven't gotten a HD tv yet , still can't figure out which one to buy , that's the major purchase since I think it would be at least

What the hell are you talking about? PS3 is and always has been able to play DVRAB (i've had one since launch), the manager of your local Blockbusters sounRAB like an uninformed idiot, considering her line of work.

2 or 3 DVRAB of the type Asda flog with the sweets at the till perhaps.

New release Blu-rays are priced very competitively with new release DVRAB.

Anyone with a PS3 & a 32" + telly who plumps for say The Dark Knight on DVD is just being luddite.

It is nearly thirty ****ing quid for one Blue Ray disc in some of the shops in Ayr. Only recently have they made an offer of two for the price of one. And that was in HMV and even then that offer wont last. I'd think about paying that if it was two for thirty on a permanent basis, they can **** right off if it is nearly thirty quid for just one though. And no, even though I plan on buying a TV [32" or bigger, not decided yet what size it will be] in March or April of 2009 I will still continue to buy the normal DVD version of a movie. It is cheaper than Blu Ray. Price is everything, a better picture quality ISN'T.

Why not buy online?

Shop prices are ridiculous, but online prices can be very very good.

As mentioned by others, the price of brand-new films on DVD is normally not much cheaper than the price you can get the Blu-ray version for.

I've never paid thirty quid for a Blu-ray Disc, or even twenty quid.

Amazon regularly have a "3 for 2" offer, which has a rather large selection.

ASDA have been doing a "2 for

The most I've paid is 17 quid for a Blu-ray on day of release because I couldn't be bothered to shop around.

As for HMV I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.

Not only are their prices extortionate in a lot of their shops they rip off the factory packaging making the discs second hand gooRAB in my book.

I wouldn't invest in a stand alone blu-ray player, but I did invest in a blu-ray / hd-dvd drive for my PC, knowing that I wanted it to be a decent HTPC that can play the odd game.

I'm glad I did, because it makes all my DVRAB look much better than any DVD player can, with the upscaling feature.

Also, I got all 3 spiderman blu-ray movies for about a tenner at Tesco's - well worth it.
