I'm approaching 45 years old and need a new exercise regime which hopefully I can learn and encompass with self defense. I need to be more flexibility and I need conditioning since I have back pain and recently I have been dealing with a pinched nerve in my neck....so I need to stretch! I haven't found very much good information comparing the various types of martial arts, though I thought Tae Kwon-Do might be an option. Does anyone have suggestions? I live in Phoenix, AZ and have yet to find a reputable school that takes martial arts seriously (many of them seem to be a daycare center for bored kids). Can anyone suggest a martial art form for me and maybe a school (if you know Phoenix)? Thanks!

U might want to look into Tai Chi Chuan. Tai Chi Chuan is an effective MA with many health benefits. Back pain goes away in time practicing it everyday. It is difficult to find a good instructor that knows both the martial and health aspects of the art. If u decide to study it then look for an instructor with at least 10 years experience.
U can also just google all the MA schools in ur area so u know what MAs are available to u if ur not interested in Tai Chi Chuan. Visit all the schools and talk with the instructors then decide for urself which is right for u. Finding a good instructor to study under is more important than finding a particular style of MAs. Watch out for McDojos. Those are places that care more about making money than teaching their students. They give out belts according to attendance rather than by the students actual skill.
Good luck
