What is your opinion on the FUNI DBZ dub?

It's funny how, when watching the dub with japanese subs, funi would always insert dialog when in actuality no one was talking at all.

example:
Vegeta and Cell are staring each other down (jap: no one talking), the camera is on Vegeta and dub Cell is talking. Then pan to Cell and dub Vegeta starts talking. They do that soooo many times during the series that it starts getting annoying and I have to take off the subs.

And most of the time the dialog being spoken is nowhere near what was actually said in japanese. It's seems DBZ is the only series where FUNi did that because in their other series the english dialog closely matched what was being said in japanese (with slight changes in order to match the flaps). It's like an uncut 4KiRAB title.

That's my main problem with the dub.

Digimon took it a step further. Even if characters were on the screen with their mouths closed, they would make them talk via thoughts.

It's actually a lot of fun to watch how many times they would do this in comparison to the Japanese version. Nowadays, it's a bit distracting and I realize that the dub was rather unfunny and imperfect (Frontier and Savers was just okay) but still it's funny to watch.

As for the actual thread, I think we can all agree on what the best DBZ dub is.....Team Four Star's.

(I think we brought this up in the abridged series thread but I would love an optional voice choice to be TFS's on the next game. I can just imagine a pre-battle scene now.

"Vegeta, that wasn't nice of you"
"OF COURSE NOT! I'M ******* EVIL!")

As a comedy series, then yes, it is a great dub.

But on the serious level, the Ocean Group dubs of the first three movies are the only English dubs of DBZ that actually get it right.

I never watched much of the Ocean dub, but I vaguely recall hearing silly sound effects inserted all over the place. I'd rather the show have replaced music and gritty voices and feel like an "extreme wrestling show" as several merabers put it than the show have goofy sound effects and sound like a Hanna Barbera cartoon.

I see FUNi's Dragon Ball Z dub as being about as bad as 4KiRAB Alabasta One Piece, really.

So basically, you want FUNimation to make their casting decisions based on vaguely-racist stereotypes?
