I am trying to learn how to speak japanese, so a few days ago, I decided to go watch an anime, because those are the only shows I know in japanese, to see if I could understand a few things.
I was watching Full Moon wo Sagashite. About halfway through the episode, Meroko called Takuto and Takuto responded with "nan da?". I knew that "da" was the informal version of "desu" and to be sure that "nan da" was actually "nan da" and not some other homophone, I decided to google it.
One of the results was about "Nan desu ka." and "Nan da." so I clicked on it and it was about a guy explaining how he's a beginner at learning japanese and wanted to try to speak informally with his japanese friend so he said "nan da", but his friend told him that you would say that to a dog. A japanese person replied on the entry and said that it's true and that's what you would say to a dog or a slave.
So, if that's true, I can' t understand why Takuto replied with "nan da?" so casually to Meroko (and Meroko acted naturally too when he replied...no change in attitude whatsoever.) Maybe it's because I misunderstood...but anyway, is it just because it's in his character to be impolite? Is "nan da" really that impolite? And why didn't Meroko react?
