What is the definition of dominant culture?

No, I don't want this wikipedia crap about "The dominant culture in a society refers to the established language, religion, behavior, values, rituals, and social customs. These traits are often the norm for the society as a whole."
I need something simpler and easier to understand. We're supposed to know what the definition is for a history test and I can't find it in my notes, history book, or any activities that we've done. It seems super simple, but if that was on the test I don't know how I would answer it! Please, if you were taking a test and were asked this question what would YOU put? Preferably something that isn't off the top of your head--but if you have a good gut feeling go ahead.

10 points to best answer--it'll help if you source yourself :)

My example would be our country the United States. The fore-fathers of this country were white Europeans or first generation Americans who saw themselves as Americans. Of course they borrowed from European cultures, whose Ideals and religions they fought amoungst to assert their own. That would of been the basis of our dominance of culture in this country. The only differences amoung white Europeans would be their languages, and their Religion. I am sure they borrowed and used ideas from the Native peoples and the African Slaves that were brought over..

In our culture today, its like we don't know what came from where unless we study the history of its origins. Look at music today, the different genre's. At one the negroe sound came from black individuals and the negroe spirituals, now there are many white individuals that have aquired that sound. Country music came from the Scots and the Irish European musical backgrounds which also was aquired by the black individuals in the south, which whites and blacks both sang and danced to.

Look at dialects. The yankee accent came from the British Gentry that Migrated and whose accent became a variation of dialects up and down the East coast. The Italians and the Irish aquired that dialect and each made it its own.

I hope that helps you!
