What is the best tool to use to remove lava rock around a fireplace to make

it flush for cultured stone? I'd like to know the tool I would need besides a hammer and the type of wood to put under the cultured stone I want to put in. I've seen brick addressed many times on DIY but never lava rock. Thanks
