What is MIDI and how does it work?

I have a synthesizer keyboard that has a midi port and a couple of music composing programs. However, I don't know how to get midi, or have midi? I don't even know how to ask this since I don't know what it is. Basics for a noob please. :)
 
Midi is WONDERFUL...

I usually do my basic tracks - by recording MIDI rather than the instrument itself.

MIDI - is a standard - which give instructions as to WHAT to play and for how long...and what instrument... with what expression....

It's like POSTSCRIPT for PRINTING... Postscript doesn't tell you WHAT to PRINT... but rather HOW to print it.

Anyway... Midi allows you to change your mind later... as to which instrument to use... or change a KEY... or Fix a note or a phrase... or you can slow down a part...
then get it right... then speed it back to 1 to 1 speed.
