What is great place to live in California for a college educated family?

We are both college graduates, and newly married. We are in our mid 20's. She is finishing up her masters degree right now. We have a son, who is 4 months old and would love to move out west to california. We are looking for an active area!!! The possibility to have a city feel, close to the ocean, lots of things to do and culture. Expected income is TBD, although we will have 50 to 60k down on a home. We really want an area that appears to have a lot to offer.
