i'm going to egypt on friday, and, although we are going to be inside the complex for much of the time, my grandmother mother and i would like to see some egyptian markets and get a feel for the 'real egypt' if you know what i mean. however, i have never been before and we were recently warned by a friend that we should always cover our shoulders. are there any other requirements for dress that we should adhere to in order to not cause any bad feelings from the local people. i don't know if this matters at all, but all three of us have very blonde hair and quite light skin (our friend also said they would be more likely to react to us because of our colouring). i am 14, my mum 45 and my grandmother 68. could anyone please please advise me on what is appropriate for all of us to wear?! thanks!!!

I do not think they will react racist towards you, but you are more likely to be mobbed by beggars and street sellers.

As for what you should wear, you should basically dress like a muslim women.

Loose fitting clothing that covers you below your knee and over your shoulders.

Then you should ideally have a head scarf too.

I would suggest going prepared and if you get there, you can see what the native women wear in the streets and copy them.
