what is a Specialty Harness Interface Plug for CAN Bus Vehicles?

I took my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee to a sound shop to install a stereo on it. Half way through the process they called me and told me I needed to buy some kind of module. I happened to remember the name it was (Scosche CR03SRB / DCCR03SRB) 2005-up Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep Specialty Harness Interface Plug for CAN Bus Vehicles). I don't know what this thing is for. The guy didn't know how to explain it but he said I needed it.

Does anyone know what it is?

Is there anyway around it?
