A capacitor is an electrical component that stores direct current (dc) electricity. They come in very small and pretty dang big. Basically, the capacitor is designed to hold the dc voltage and then release it when the circuit design wants it. They are used in AC to DC converters, as well as many other circuits.

A capacitor stores and discharges electricity for example when a electric motor first starts up and then a centrifical swith kicks out to run on regular current. On automotive ignition the capacitor holds a charge until released by drivers controled by the computor.
