What happens to Calling All Innovators?

Remember that the $10m was not all price money - it included marketing support etc. But if there are no S^3 AT&T phones, they of course won't spend that money. So, the competition may survive, but the total value of the prices and in-kind support will probably be nowhere near $10m. My guess.

Agreed, and you likely won't hear about it again, particularly from Nokia. I mean, for developers, what would be the point?

The idea was to develop applications for a potential Symbian market for U.S. users. Now that that's out the window, it'd be like having a contest on who could develop the best Commodore applications.

I'm assuming any developers who thought to take part, are in the process of pulling out.

And Nokia is lucky that Microsoft will be handling all developer relations in the future, because Espoo has poisoned its own relations with developers for a long, long time, possibly terminally.

After so many strategy changes year after year, why would they ever trust the company again, particularly after the whole 'Qt, rah-rah-rah' that is now a debacle?

Exactly, this is what people aren't getting.

It isn't because Nokia partnered with Microsoft, it's how they did it. They left everyone else holding the bag, including their LAST partnership with Intel.

I'm going to keep saying it, if Nokia cared at all about the CURRENT, IN THE MARKET ecosystem then they would have insured Qt got on WP. They didn't. That speaks volumes.

You really think Nokia can survive the 2 years its going to take to transition to being fully MS's lapdog?

Elop made it clear, Symbian, Meego, and Qt have no future, no one is going to stick around. And I implore those looking at Nokia devices to rethink it, you're just going to be frustrated as the updates get delayed more and more.

Because, you know, killing the Motivation for those division's employees and slashes their resources makes updates come faster.

I can hardly believe i'm saying this but even Apple never screwed me over so rough. I bought a device that is for all intents and purposes defunct.

I don't see how that's really the case. It's the same device today as it was on Thursday. There is still no other device that can take pictures like the N8, except for an actual camera. It still plays videos of any format in HD. It's still an excellent music player, etc.

I might never buy another Nokia, depending on what sort of goods they end up producing, but my N8 isn't suddenly a brick. I'll probably still be using it a year from now.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly, depending on what happens a while from now, i either will be buying another Nokia or looking elsewhere, but for now, my N8 is still king :)

X2, I have no regrets buying an N8 and have no plans to replace it anytime soon. Its unfortunate that nokia decided to kill off symbian as i really liked the direction it was heading. Well, hopefully Nokia will follow through with and continue to support Symbian during the transition period.

In regards to buying another Nokia, I guess that depends on how crippled the WM devices will be.

I appreciate your point of view and I agree with you. I'm just disappointed because I honestly expected future development of the OS / UI. As it stands now Symbian^3 is and will remain stagnant. Oh well at times like this I defer to one of my favourite Buddhist sayings..."The Glass Is Already Broken" I find solace in that.

Yeah most of us aren't going to throw down the money after buying an S^3 device just a few months ago.

The N8 can cover most phone and smartphone tasks natively, but its doubtful we'll see any major third-party dev support after this.

I just can't imagine someone going out and buying an S^3 device unless its really cheap on carrier subsidies.

But you can kiss any new applications from major developers, sayonara. In fact, I'd worry about any service based apps deciding to pull out and switch off their Symbian-customer servers.

Skyfire did it; I wouldn't doubt if Opera did it fairly soon as well, along with a bunch of the social apps. I'm also betting that Rovio won't be taking the time to release new games or versions of Angry Birds for Symbian.

Anyway, I don't expect I'll be getting any more bug fix updates for my E72 either. It'll likely always remain a buggy POS.
