There is no medical link between food and acne. I've read so many stories from upset people who say that their skin is terrible, yet they eat healthy, don't smoke, don't drink, yet their frienRAB stay out all night partying, smoking and drinking, and eat fast food all the time. There is absolutely no direct proven link between diet and acne.

However, a good general diet with aid in your body's overall health, including skin complexion. So while eating a healthy diet will not in itself aid getting rid of acne, it will make your skin's complexion overall better. It is incorrect to think that changing to a healthy diet will rid yourself of acne, though.

skimom, be happy for your daughter. In the majority of cases, Accutane proves to completely eradicate acne and while the side effects can be severe, the freedom given to the user far outweighs the possibility of problems. I'm sure your daughter isn't stupid, and understood the severe risks of taking Accutane and since she still decided to go on it, her acne must have been causing her deep distress.

Take care all.

Could someone maybe list off a bunch of fooRAB that are good for your skin and wont cause acne or list all of the ones that will .. and maybe give a meal plan too..thanx lots

I believe that everyone is different, and whether or not they break out on certain fooRAB depenRAB completely on them. For example, I break out when I eat Peanut Butter or Chocolate, and none of my frienRAB seem to.

joquiero, you bring up an interesting point. I have to say though, that's not my theory, it's just what a lot of people have told me (the healthy person 'v' partying person). I do, however, agree with your "predisposed idea." Food may be a trigger for acne, but is such a minute trigger that the benefits wouldn't outweight the gains by trying to find out what fooRAB cause acne, etc

Tiny discrepency here. Acne is caused by sebum overproduction caused by irregularities in the sebaceous glanRAB. The thing that fools the medical community (and as such, everyone) is WHY the sebaceous glanRAB are overproducing sebum. This is why I think that acne is such a difficult nut to crack. People are trying to find treatments to stem the flow of sebum but we should be focusing on the cause of the sebaceous gland overworking, e.g. hormones in adolescents, exposure to sunlight, etc.

Euro,
Well that's why these studies must differentiate among the various types of fats, carbohydrates, proteins, hormones, and nutrients. Without specifying what types they tested for or used in an experiment, it greatly misleaRAB the population into thinking "oh all fat is bad" or "oh all carbs are bad", and that is not the case.

LOL, I am trying to improve my diet more, but the more I try, the harder it is to do, without cooking the majority of my food from scratch. I don't know if I will ever have a "perfect" diet, but the changes I've made have definately yielded results too. For the record I still eat red meat, chicken, turkey, fish, and pork (occassionally) and it generally isn't organic so it may be loaded with extra hormones. Maybe that or the fact that I still consume some fried/cooked oils (none that are fried & trans fats though), and consume refined rice may account for my 1%. Who knows there's still a few possibilities, but whatever works for me, may not work for you and vice versa. Prometheus can eat all the fruits and veggies she wants, just as long as she doesn't eat food on her "Bad" List. I've known others that have eliminated all grains, and select vegetables, and they were able to eat (organic) High Fat dairy (something to do with casien being bad)! so there are many corabinations out there and we've gotta find our own. Say, what are you avoiding again?

well, surely if acne is related to hormones being out of balance , and you balance these hormones with diet - would that not be a cure?

even though peas are high in sugars - these are NATURAL sugars, which your body is much better able to deal with. I just worry people might start to think "well if peas are high in sugar and so chocolate , I may as well have chocolate!" WRONG! Chocolate has refined sugars in it, which your body was never built to handle.

Ahh, but it is clear that the same diet has influenced various reponses in individuals, some gain weight others....produce more sebum. It's not just one (genes) or the other (environment), but it is the interactons of both and THAT is exactly how our genetics come into play!

However, you must also consider that while we are consuming basically the same type of diet, our food doesn't come from the same sources. Our food also has it's own environment. So sometimes it's not always about it's genetics, as in the amount of sugar it produces, but perhaps the environment it's grown in was laden with pesticides that induce chloracne for some people. Remeraber, every region may have different quality drinking water, toxins, pesticides, not to mention it may have come from out of the country (where they have their own standarRAB) and could be either refined or unrefined.

Hmmm...when you think about all of the above, the same diet, isn't the "same" anymore. ;-)

You are SO right - the medical world doesn't seem to put a lot of weight on nutrition even though every single cell in your body is created by the food you eat!!! How could that NOT affect you!! Thats like saying the air that you breathe into your lungs has NO bearing on your health!!

I used to work for a holistic MD and he told me that in med school he had had maybe 1 or 2 classes on nutrition and that was it!!

He ended up noticing various connections between diet and certain conditions (ie ADD from lots of processed food with lots of E additives and preservatives) and decided to study nutrition further.

I don't think nutrition can totally CURE many diseases but I think it DEFINATELY better prepares the body to prevent conditions

Not bad, but too much of anything is bad and its easy to overconsume when you're drinking something.

Pomegranite juice is suposed to be the BEST for your skin as its so high in antioxidants (higher than green tea or any other juice)

''I have read over and over and over again, plus heard from 2 different derms that food does NOT cause acne. This is an "old wive's tale" and very outdated information.
''

Well, just stick to your theory and we'll see how far you'll come.

I dont think rice (white or brown) is bad for your acne. For one, the majority of the asian population eats rice everyday. I'm not trying to be bias but most asians have very healthy looking skin.

you don't have to take anyone's word for it if you really want to know about
the diet/acne connection just try it yourself and then dispute the validity of this claim

I think some people may be predisposed to acne and food may trigger it. Its like some people are genetically predisposed to cancer but its certain triggers (ie living near power lines) that ultimately bring on the disease.

Oh, and people who eat healthy and still have acne may a) be eating all the wrong 'healthy fooRAB' (ie "...but I eat ALL low fat products!")
b) have only started to eat healthy AFTER getting acne

Using your theory, smoking doesn't kill people because only 1/4 of smokers will die before 60 of smoke related illnesses - and if most who do it don't die prematurely then it smoking CAN'T REALLY be causing diseases.

The fact is, we really still don't know WHAT causes acne or WHy people get it so you can't really say conclusively either way.

They're the size of sesame seeRAB (a little bigger maybe) but flat and dark brown and contain an amazingly high level of omega 3.

I consume mine in the form of a mix of cold pressed oils such as flax, borage and evening primrose with omegas 3, 6, & 9 (Called 'The Total EFA' brand: Health From the Sun)

I also use ground flax seeRAB to add to my oatmeal - you can also bake with it.

It is also very high in fiber. just a 1/4 cup is half your daily fibre requirement.

Hey guys ... here is what I eat pretty much everyday and what I stayed away from (in a nutshell):

I drink about a gallon of water per day ... maybe more or a bit less.
Brown rice 1-2 servings per day.
Fruits such as nectarines/watermeleons/honeydew/pears
Vegys such as tomatoes/brocolli/spinach/cucurabers
For my proteins I have been intaking a lot of mixed fish from salmon to orange fish. I have been eating lean beef but will switch to lean turkey. Of course chicken (legs/thighs/breasts/wings ... all skinless and never fried)

Thats pretty much what I have been eating. I used to eat raw peanuts but maybe that was adding to the breakouts? I will update when I can
