'Why don't we have a house
On a hill like that, Jim? '
'We're paying off the R.V.,
Maude.'
Hill she got, wooden house, land.
Laying chickens, tomato garden.
Friendliest neighbors, swapping recipes.
Jim settled in. By degrees.
Fields laying fallow. R.V. in the barn.
Maude stirred pots. Bisquits warm, high,
Slathered in honey, inside and out.
Still, her Jim had a nasty doubt.
Maude's new song would age too soon.
Manhatten's Avenues yelling, demanding,
'Come back! Back! Clothes. Jewels.
You'll miss the condo, never those mules! '
She got a rusted plowshare, hammer, chisel.
Jim bought seeds, boots. No eyebrows raised.
Spring answered all, on their red-soil lands...
Boots, Holly Hobbie Bonnets, calloused hands
Made one year come and fifty go,
With quilts, chimney days, crops to spare.
Jim and Maude, rockered, swapping stories,
Forgot their R.V., covered in morning glories.
Regwah...WELL, Moses COULD have asked for directions! Obstinate ole cuss!!!
Good Morning!
