What do i need for my Sub?

I have my subwoofer connected to my speakers with RCA ports on the other end plugged into my amp. So my subwoofer plays what the speaker is playing basically, i want to get a crossover so it only plays the bass lines and lower frequencies, i think frequencies is the right word. But what is a crossover and how do i know which one to buy. I know i need one but i don't want to buy the wrong one. And what does it take to install it, does it go with the amp or sub or what? Thanks for any advise guys!

I'd be very surprised if your amplifier doesn't already have a built-in crossover. Look for a switch that says something like HPF/LPF. You'll want to set it for "low-pass filter" if it's equipped.
