How are they connected to each other or to other elements of American culture

Americans were for the most part Christians. So the important thing was to believe in Jesus. The concept of dying is not as scary as it was before. People have been desensitized mainly cause hell is taboo to talk about. Now days, a lot of people think they will just be dead. No judgment at all. They also feel we are so advanced in knowledge, we are too Intelligent to believe in the bible. But pride goes before a fall.

That if you're not a Christian - you're going to burn in hell. You need to repent to Jesus and be saved.

Which American culture? There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of American cultures. An American of Asian descent will most likely have different views than an American of Irish descent.

We're not a homogeneous bunch.
