There aren't really any essentials just upgrades. Some good upgrades of course are some quality aftermarket speakers, head unit and maybe some tweeters. It matters what sound you are looking for, its also nice to have a low power amp going to your speakers tuned to pick up the high and mid range bass.
I agree. Its more about what kind of sound you are looking for. Many newer model cars have decent sound systems for the most part, but aftermarket speakers in my opinion always help to greatly improve a system. However, in a 2005 I would think a good pair of tweeters would be the perfect addition.
