I have an 02 Pontiac Aztek with AWD and I hear a clunking when shifting from park to D or R and vise versa. I have located the noise to the 2nd back half of what I only know as the driveshaft. I am wondering if there is a specific name for this piece.

I know what u joints sound/do when bad just thought being awd this is different bc it has cvjoints so i thought it was the driveshaft itself bad just didnt know what it was called
underneath my aztek i have the transfer/tranny case then extends out to a driveshaft which pieces into another driveshaft. its not the full driveshaft like what my truck has. so in theory it looks like 2 driveshafts. the rear one is where the "clunk" comes from when i put it into gear. I guess i didnt think that the aztek had u joints thought being awd it had something else. hope its not the driveshaft ill look tomorrow and see if it has u joints if so im sure thats the sound

Maybe you're referring to the CV shafts??...which is the Constant Velocity drive shafts for the front wheel drive part of the vehicle.

So..the cv joints are the constant Velocity joints located inside the cv boots. The cv boots are on the inside and outside of those shafts.

in layman's terms it is called a "U-Joint" which stands for Universal joint. it is a big X shaped device with rotating caps on all for ends. these are found anywhere there are drive-shafts coming together. to allow for flexing or slight change of direction of the moving parts.

also, not that i care- i am just trying to help the asker with his question, but whoever gave this a "thumbs down" answer, has no business talking about cars or car parts its quite obvious they have no knowledge of parts. if you have a better answer, then type it already.
