What anime's are definite sub-only?

Great or not, it's pretty inaccurate in information. One off the top of my head, episode 3 where Aida says Touji's punch affected Shinji, when the original was Aida comparing the punch to Touji's.

I disagree with this choice. I like the dub for this one, and even though I know it has its shortcomings, it's still an excellent dub, not only for Hamill, but Leachman's Dola as well. Joe Hisaishi's new score is a nice bonus, too. It's certainly better than the older dub, which had terrible acting all around and stale ADR script writing in straining to be "accurate" in exchange for fluency. Even the leaRAB, who are less mature-sounding than Disney's dub, sounded very bad. (While it's true that Pazu and Sheeta do sound older than they should in Disney's dub, I've heard a lot worse, acting-wise; at least they don't sound flat or lifeless like, say, Anakin Skywalker or Padme in the Star Wars prequels.) And the guy who did Muska in the first dub is OH SO HORRIBLE--absolutely boring, with no emotion or menace in tone... certainly no match for Hamill. (Note that I refrain from comparing either dub to the Japanese because I find it foolhardy to do so.)

So I'm sorry but I think Disney's dub is the better one; although not a replica of the original Japanese, it's far from an unbearable dub. There are a few places where the extra dialogue isn't necessary, but in the end the dub is what it is. Granted there ARE parts of the Japanese version I like better too, but there are just as many parts of the English version I like just as much. It goes both ways for me. At least it's not the travesty that "Warriors of the Wind" was.

As for Escaflowne I agree that there are some rather oddities in the ADR script and Dilandu's VA is indeed jarring, but it also has its positives; Van, Allen, Merle, Folken, and Dornkirk are all excellently voiced. I wouldn't say it's a bad dub, just an uneven one.

The biggest problem I had with the Samurai X dub was that it didn't sound like ANYBODY was acting in that dub. They all sounded like they were reciting lines. It's unfortunate, because the studio responsible for the dub in question, Monster Island, has done far better results with Nadia and Petite Princess Yucie.

The dub is certainly bearable, but the sub is SO much better and it's SUCH a good anime that it deserved a MUCH better dub, like the Rurouni Kenshin dub. Plus, it's the whole "there's no reason they would ever speak English" thing.

...Whaaat? Godannar's dub was awesome. It's especially notable in that it's one of the only English dubs in which the voice actors recorded in group sessions, Japan-style, rather than going into the studio solo.

Hilary Haag (Anna) is love, although I suppose if you're not used to her voice it can be a bit jarring. I didn't mind the accents at all, and I thought Shizuru sounded awesome. She was rocking the line "Who the hell do you think I am?!" before it became the awesome thing for everyone to say. It's a dub that, even if you prefer the Japanese version, that should be watched at least once if not for the stellar and wonderfully over the top performances that they bring to the table. Who says American VAs can't do hot blood?

It was a dub that, in corabination of the stupid awesomeness of the show itself had me re-watching it a good 3 or 4 times within the span of about 2 months or so!

I have not. But I've heard terrible things.

Actually, I've heard a lot of horror stories about the show in general, so I might end up skipping it entirely. I NOT LIKE CONFUSION!!!!

Returning to the topic of DA02, was that really a hack dub? I ask because I remeraber watching it as a kid... I've looked up the japanese plot, and it does'nt look like they changed much. Can't comment on the acting, though...

And no Ghibli films, folks.

Eh...it's not so much a hack dub as it is overloaded with very bad jokes every 2 minutes. I guess as a kid, I didn't notice but now that I'm older, it's very grating.

I still think Davis' voice actor was bad. I knew there was a reason I didn't like him when I was a kid

I kind of prefer the subbed version of "Spirited Away" over the dub. The dub, kinda didn't like the performance from Chihiro and Haku.

Urusei Yatsura seems pretty much undubbable. There have been at least four separate attempts, but none of them really worked too well IMO. I think it's a corabination of the original voices being really unique and hard to match, corabined with the fact that the show is so Japanese in terms of jokes and such. It just seems weird to hear American voice actors making these jokes and puns about things that they clearly don't know much about, like the frequent references to Japanese mythology.

Luckily Animeigo's subs are complete and very well-done.

Well I did like her as Lilo from Lilo and Stitch and comparing her Brattyness from those two it did seem different, but listening to that for a majority of the film does get on one nerves. Also why did Haku sound like he wanted to kill me?

Another thing I noticed was a few changes in dialogue.

Were the dubs of Hokuto No Ken, Revolutionary Gril Utena, and When They Cry - Higurashi that bad? I never bother to watch the Japanese versions.

You're getting the wrong ideas from the wrong people. Evangelion is widely considered to be a terrific show, and the dub is great. The only time you're going to hear backlash are from a minority of people who are more vocal about it than those who find it awesome. It's confusing, but it's not something that nobody can follow along with.

Wait, are you asking if the dubs are bad because you've seen them already and you're wondering why we think so or are you asking why they're bad because you meant to say "I never bother to watch the English versions" ?

In any case, IMO, I've never seen Utena's but Higarashi's is painfully obvious that they're reading from a script (Plus, American's aren't exactly that good at doing loli characters) and as for Fist of the North Star....well, just watch this comparison clip from one of the movies and tell me what you think

Yeeeaaaahhhhhhh......no...
