Generally, No. However, there were some masters who educated their slaves and treated them "fairly well" in comparison to the norm.
Our modern, popular conceptions of slavery are of blacks working on the whites' plantations in destitute conditions. However, while slaves could not vote at all, some did work in artisan shops and as merchants away from their masters. It really did vary from master to master what kind of treatment the slaves received.
