Weird Tailbone

After over a year of pain I finally visited an Ortho Surgeon, had an MRI and got my diagnosis. I have a single hard bone instead of a regular segmented tailbone. There are NO SEGMENTS and no bendabilty. Over the last 5 years I have lost 90+ lbs and at first believed that why my tailbone hurt (I have had back pain for years)..... but not true. Has anyone ever had this? Or heard of anyone who has had this? I was told that I had 2 options - pain management for the rest of my life or surgery to remove it. I have read good comments for and against both- but I would love to hear if anyone has heard of this? I am seeing a Chiropractor on Friday and have 3 weeks before my surgery. Any help would be appreciated. I literally cannot handle this anymore! Thanks.

Hi Eribelle. I'm somewhat confused Many people have solid tailbones (sacrum,) and some people don't. What kind of surgery is planned, and why are you seeing a chiropractor before surgery?

I went to see a chiropractor because my family doc suggested I get a second opinion and check alternatives. I am slated for a coccygectomy. However after having a few adjustments I am in a lot less pain then previously my tailbone hardly touches the seat- however pants still seem to aggravate it! I am going back next week for another adjustment and getting a second ortho opinion on next friday. The issue is that my coccyx has no segments and it is a solid mass, thus sitting and standing were very painful. After the adjustment my hips seem to be a bit lower and I was told to work on core and glute muscles to further tighten my sacrum area and to keep my tailbone under myself as opposed to pointing down. I am not 100% that this is the cure- It could just be temporary relief as I still do have some pain (but hey i've only had 1 adjustment and am down in pain meRAB already) I just want to check all options before submitting myself to surgery.... and a long recovery.

Surgery should always be considered as the last resort. And it's always a great idea to get several opinions. I'm glad you've found some relief from your initial treatment. You can always resort to surgery when nothing else helps!

Give the Chiropractic at least three months to see real results. The body holRAB onto dysfunction easier than it holRAB onto normalcy. Your body didn't get this way in a day or two so will take more than a day or two to readjust itself!

Surgery should be your very last option!

Good luck!

I recently saw a tv show where a woman had similar drastic weightloss and only then did she have the problem with the tailbone. She had the coccygectomy and it helped. From what I understand the "padding" she had before had kind of buffered the problem but as she went toward a healty weight the positionting and protruding of the coccyx was very troublesome. SounRAB like the coccygectomy might be a good option.

I'm always one for 'if there's a solution then let's do it'. I can't imagine living with pain that I haven't at least tried to correct.
