Weird breathing issues

First off, had I insurance I'd have already gone to see a doctor. Unfortunately, I won't have any health insurance for a few months and I have other important things to pay for, which is why I'm going to ask here.

For a few days, I've had weird breathing issues. I've not really had difficulty breathing but I've been taking deep breaths almost continuously. I keep doing it until I can get a really good breath that makes me feel great for a few moments before the cycle starts again. Usually when I try to sleep though, my breathing goes back to normal. When I wake up I find that I breath normally for a short while.

I don't know what this is and it's really starting to bug me. Worrying about it it probably making it worse.

Some additional information:

- I'm overweight
- I usually have bad hurtburn and/or acid reflux quite a bit. I think I have GERD.
- My nose has been a little runny lately
- Sometimes when I cough, it feels like I'm breaking up some phlegm in my throat.
- I've been getting acid reflux a lot for the last few days, though no heartburn
- My breathing issues tend to get worse after eating or when I do too much moving. I felt winded after making my bed the other night.
- Sometimes, though not all the time, my chest feels weird. Not like anything is seriously wrong, but just a bit odd. It reminds me of when I'm around smokers for too long.
- I can clearly feel my heart beating in my chest at times.
- After lying or even just sitting in bed for awhile, I tend to feel better, even though I usually don't when sitting at my computer.

I don't know if all or any of that is related, but that's the only relavent additional information I can tell you.

You did not mention any edema or swelling of the legs. Have you been diagnosed with asthma? Sometimes the GERD can cause real issues with phlegm and breathing. Are you on meds for the GERD? Do you have anything other than the breathing that would make you anxious? Are you in moderate to severe pain involving the stomach and or abdomen? Sincerely, searchin

It sounds like you may possibly have diagnosed yourself. The Acid reflux can irritate your lungs and throat causing breathing difficulties. If that is the case, there are a few things you can try:
-watch your diet. Avoid high fat foods, greasy or fried foods, spicy and acidic foods, tomatoes, citrus fruit/juice, caffeine, carbonation, mint, alcohol, coffee, chocolate, etc...
-Weight loss can help. If nothing else, try to keep thing loose around your waist. Have a loose waistband and loose belts.
-Prop your bed up on an incline. A couple bricks under each side of the headboard. 4-6 inches is good. Those bed risers work well also.
-Try some OTC meds. There are Proton Pump Inhibitors such as Omprazole, Prevacid and Zegrid that are OTC. They are lower dosages that the prescriptions, but may help. Zantac and Pepcid may also help. In addition my GI doc recommended Gaviscon (if you go this route, avoid the strawberry banana which is horrible tasting in my opinion.)
-Some people have luck with DGL Licorice and apple cider vinegar.

There is much more information on the reflux board.

No.

Not really. I'm taking prilosec which helps a bit. I intend to see a doctor about this in a few months when I'll have health insurance again.

Yeah I do, my life has been pretty stressful what with money issues and trying to find a job. I don't dwell on it all the time, but maybe it's stuck in my subconscious or something.

Not at all.

Thanks for the replies, both of you. I figured it was probably all GERD related, but I wanted some other opinions. Typically I'm not too bothered by things but the breathing oddities is what got me nervous.

I can't believe i found someone out there who has the same breathing problems i have.... everything you have decribe is what i'm going threw...it all started sept 2, 2010...i been to doctors..emergency room...allergists... and they can't find anything wrong...except to say "well..maybe it just anxiety" or the lastest---GERD---Don't we all burp ? I'm so frustrated...

I know that there is a surgery that can be done to try to prevent GERD problems. If I recall correctly, it involved wrapping part of the stomach around, I can't think of what it's called, the muscle that's supposed to keep the contents of your stomach, in your stomach. You could try asking about that if you've tried everything else. I'll give myself some time before I ask about that.

I think the worst thing, or at least one of the worst about the breathing problems is how damn sore my chest becomes after breathing deeply all day.
