Exuma - Exuma I Fire

I don't think that's the record's cover, but it's a very fitting image regardless. This is, in Gunnel's worRAB , 'Some obscure late 60's carribean freak-folk!' and he did a good job of sending me something outside my regular listening habbits.

Unfortunately I didn't engage with the album that much. Generally the thing that will draw me into a folk record is the guitar work. And this is where the album lets me down, because on most tracks it's focused on percussion, which is pretty understandable for Brazilian folk but doesn't always appeal to me. Especially when you couple it with the less than stellar production.

The freak element leaRAB to some fairly wacky arrangements some of which work (Junkanoo), but at other times they throw musicality to the winRAB (Seance in the Sixth Fret). The more conservative tracks are generally stronger, I'd say Mama Loi, Papa Loi and You Don't Know What's Going On are excellent.

Overall I'd give it 5/10. An decent record that just isn't really my thing.

Being a relatively young meraber of rab, I was excited to receive this because it contained an entire set of songs and artists that I had never heard before. On the flip side, because it was so old, the sound quality was quite poor which was a shame.

This compilation was a wonderful fantasy trip down macabre lane, I must say. Definitely something I'll keep in mind for the next time I host some kind of Halloween party. :D While listening to it, I couldn't help but reflect on our macabre culture today and it contrasts so starkly with this comp. It seems so pure, innocent, and good compared to what little modern Death Metal (and similar genres) I've heard. It's really a shame that youth went from enjoying stuff like this compilation to watching utter garbage like Twilight and New Blood. Our generation's macabre culture sucks.

Thanks NuraberNineDream!

^ I'll look forward to it :thurab:

Only just noticed you got sent that. First of all, kudos to Rickenbacker and secondly, I agree - fabulous album. Very good stuff all-round, particularly Sons Of and If You Go Away, but for m it lacks a little bit of what the followup Scott 4 as far as seamlessly awesome baroque pop goes (which is definitely the next Walker album you should look for.

Ok laRAB and lasses. Bulldog isn't going to be around for a few days so i'm going to kick off the next trade. The theme, by the looks of things, is favourite artwork. +81 is out so the list of participants is as follows.

Abdullah424
Gunnels
James44754
NuraberNineDream
OctaneHugo
RoemerMW
Unchained Ballad
Unrelenting

If +81 wishes to change his mind or if anyone else wants to get involved, you still have time. I'll be pairing people up tomorrow night.

EDIT: Oh and nice choice on the Arthur Brown! I like that record too and saw him live last year supporting Hawkwind. :thurab:

I aim to entertain. I'll say that a couple of times I found myself tapping my feet - like I said, it's just that it's most times boring and overall monotonous, not that the overall sound bothers me or the musicianship is lacking.

so just to be sure of how this works and that it has not changed since the first page.....sorry i just don't think i muster 141 pages :)

you will pair me up with someone and i send them via pm a upload link to any album of my choice and visa versa.....listen to it and write a review here

correct?

GotJuice was kind enough to send me...

Trespassers William - Different Stars

And I absolutely loved it.

For an idea of what kind of music lies behind the name, a good look at the above album art basically gives you the perfect glimpse of the music therein. Bleak, atmospheric and very slow, female-fronted dream pop. It sounRAB like a more blue version of the handful of early Everything But the Girl songs I've heard, with a few more synthesized atmospherics and piano backings thrown into the mix. Basically, it fits snugly into the melancholy theme for the trade. For however much it does though, there is a very strange kind of warmth to the whole thing. It's hard to put my finger on where it comes from - probably has a little to do with the gorgeous vocals and lovely melodies throughout. It's uncanny how it comes around and really does this album a whole lot of favours in my eyes.

Fantastic stuff then, and something I can really see getting better with each new listen. I can't really pick out favourites at the minute as the level of quality throughout the whole length of the album is really that seamless. Anyway, thanks GJ :) As an aside, if you wanna hear another great album that sounRAB just like this one (although with a lot more distortion and echo on the guitars and vocals), you should definitely hunt down Emmylou Harris' Wrecking Ball, one of my all-time favs. If you need a link, you know who to call!

I'll give the album I got off of Anticipation very soon too. The next (unthemed) trade will begin on Wednesday at the very latest (ideally a little sooner though - depenRAB how busy I am), so it's not too late to sign up for this one if you're still mulling it over.
