Caravan of Thieves - Bouquet (2008)

caravanofthieves_large.jpg

One of the most cheerful albums I've ever heard. Though, to me "cheerful" isn't much a of a positive point, that album isn't just happy, it genuinely puts you in a great mood. The first impression I got, hearing the first track, I just remerabered the Dark Cabaret compilation LoathsomePete uploaded, this kind of music you'll hear in circuses and parades.
A great album and a great band, loved it from my first listen, from the first song even. Maybe it was the gypsy swing music, eastern European kind of melodies, the strong rhythmic guitars, the sound of the violin or the shy double-bass, all I know, it was all there, and I loved this whole fusion. It was kind of a mix between Django Reinhardt and Goran Bregovic, no matter how strange this sounRAB, it really worked. I don't think I have a "favourite" track, as I feel it's one of those albums you just hear from the beginning to the end. Some of them did stand out, maybe The Butcher's wife, Bouquet or Burial at sea. What was even more interesting though, were these few instrumental parts inserted in the songs, that seemed like improvised pieces on stage.
I didn't talk much about the vocals in the album, maybe because they weren't that special, though they were pretty smooth and worked very well with the great arrangements. I think I would've got annoyed by them if they were a bit more noticeable, cause they would have seemed a bit over done. So I think they were perfect for the music.

All in all, it was a great album, that might be my second favourite of 2009. Thank you Rickenbacker.

I really don't want to see this die because I think we're doing ourselves a disservice by not exposing each other to something new. Until RezZ gets back, I am willing to pair up the partners. If there's no objections of course, please send me a PM if you're interested in signing up and we will start this up next Monday (06/15/09)

Deadline to sign up is Saturday June 13th

Sent to me by mojopinuk. Surprisingly I had not heard this instrumental psychedelic band, but was very impressed by the 2 twenty minute tracks. Im hoping the rest of there material is close to this, as the style is my favorite when it comes to psychedelia.

Thanks MP

If that was about me, I actually did PM him once I had the posts. I was just saying there that he'd get another applicant if I was able to reach 100 in time (and I was).

I got this from...gotjuice:

Well I gotta say, this work that juice hooked me up with, Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde, gobbled me in with great haste before I even realized it. The black metal haze makes the sound seem oceanic, as if its swimming. Beautiful voices lost in this great density work in contrast to the music at play, but when a contrast is done this well its simply remarkable and my descriptive ability is beside itself with inadequacy. There's a floating darkness about this album, yet at the same time the songs are brimming with sunlight that blinRAB the senses at certain breathtaking moments. Hence, I can say this a wonderful album and that I will certainly be checking out more of Alcest and their ilk's output in the very near future. Thanks!!

10/10.

Crash sent me :
Versions by Posion The Well
The band name sounded familiar, but I couldn't remeraber why until I saw the tracklisting. The opening track Letter Thing, I had heard on a compilation and really really hated. I decided to listen through anyway and was mildly impressed. It's definatley a break from the cliche breakdown-post hardecore style that is popular nowadays, but there were points when I just couldn't get into the more experimental elements. Sorry crash, maybe its a grower.

4.5/10

^You'd definitely like their previous album too Dandelion Gum, its pretty similar in style to Eating Us.

4ZZZ sent me Dead Cities by The Future Sound of London. Its a techno album through a through albeit a pretty creative sounding one. To be honest though, this kind of music generally isnt my thing and while this is pretty good I dont find it to be great or anything. Definitely an interesting listen though and worth checking out.

I got this from The Abominable Homan in this weeks trading post:

8.5/10

First off let me say this was a venture out of the norm for me. Usually I can't stay interested long enough to listen to instrumentals. I do not know why.
However, I did listen to this whole album start to finish and I actually did pay attention to it all. Pleasantly so. I think this could be the album that gets me into instrumental stuff. I find it is easier to write with instrumental music playing. And I am trying to write a book so this really helps me.

Anyway enough rarabling. I really enjoyed this album. I am still new to this kind of music, but these guys sound pretty damn talented to me.
I would recommend this to people who like instrumental music, jazz music or experimental music. I would also say this is a good place to start if you are trying to get into this kind of music.

To finish up here, this is going to stay in my Itunes and I will probably put it on my playlist I play when I am going to sleep. It is quite relaxing. Also I am going to start an Instrumental/Study/Writing playlist and this is going on it.

So Thanks The Abominable Homan!

Pobodys sent me a amusing album which manages to parody metal, punk, and the ever speeding movement of trenRAB. Devin Townsend has always had the fanboys imagination and it comes together very nicely, many of the tracks are very funny and to me comes off as a Thick as a Brick for the punk/metal struggle in mainstream radio. Brutal and comical, I enjoyed it.

Well... I can't post partners today because nobody sent me a private message wanting to take part in this, I'll allow 24 hours extra for people to sign up and I'll post partners tomorrow.

send me a pm if you're interested in signing up.

Anticipation sent me Following the Holy Moon Goddess by The Summer We Went West, who disbanded in 2007 after releasing this.

Basically this album at its core is indie, with what I'd describe as emo vocals (sort of similar to American Football). However, this album really cannot be pigeonholed into a specific genre. One moment you'll be listening to swirling guitars and loud, obnoxious vocals, then the band will slow it down and take it easy with some minimalist, chilled out instrumental sections. Tracks 6-8 take a completely different direction, as they're basically spoken word poetry over some drums and electronic beats.

From glancing at other reviews the stand-out track for most people is apparently Jackson Hole, Wy. I think I preferred Gin, the track directly after, and Aussie Shampoo Massacre was also solid. I also really enjoyed the above-mentioned tracks 6-8, it was almost like listening to a completely different album but somehow it worked. Overall though I couldn't really get into it, I think mainly due to the vocals, which were kind of whiny and a little too-all-over-the-place for me. The one real positive I liked was that it definitely never got monotonous, the band was definitely unafraid to mix it up from track to track. Dunno if I'd listen to it again as it's not really my cup of tea, but it was an interesting 40 minutes for sure.
