The Raveonettes - Whip It On

Me and the Raveonettes go waaaaaaaaay back... kinda. They first came to my attention a good 5 or 6 years ago when a few tunes of theirs would pop up on the music channels or radio back when I used to pay any attention to such things. I never got into them myself at the time, so when Mojo offered me this one, it felt like I was getting in touch with my roots again (to put it nice and pretentiously).

I remeraber liking whatever songs I'd heard of theirs before this (can't remeraber which ones for the life of me) and, to my surprise, that good impression hadn't waned at all in all those years since. Basically, I loved the album. Normally shoegaze simply isn't my thing at all, but the corabination with dirty, good old-fashioned garage rock really worked wonders with this one. I liked the deadpan vocal delivery as well. The whole thing reminded me a lot of early BRMC. Regarding favourite tracks, it's an almost seamless level of quality that runs throughout the album, but I'd say the middle trio Chains, Cops On Our Tail and My Tornado went down best with me.

All in all, very good stuff.

By the way, if we do only end up with four participants in the next draw (which is looking increasingly likely), we might as well just all swap albums between us.

Apologies for this one being so late. James sent me:

Radios Appear by Radio Birdman

I asked for punk, which I am extremely poorly versed in, and James obliged by sending me this album from Australian punk-rockers Radio Birdman.

First of all, I can see how this album would be a very good introduction into punk, as it is definitely a punk album but is also accessible. It's not extremely hardcore or anything which is generally a turnoff for me. Some songs such as Man With Golden Helmet might not even necessarily be considered punkish.

For the most part though, you get the driving, aggressive, fast-paced rock that defines the genre, and that I for whatever reason have never been able to get into. Even here, as much as I did did certain songs such as the aforementioned Man With Golden Helmet, Hand of Law, and Aloha Steve and Danno, there's just something...I dunno...doesn't click with me. Apart from those standouts, a lot of the other tracks did bleed together for me. Sonically, there's nothing wrong with the band. All of the instruments do a damn fine job, the drummer is tight and has plenty of solid fills, and the guitar work is also very well done. I also do like the vocals, as they transition nicely from being pretty laid back to the more aggressive yelling/yelping. But I'm still not entirely sold on it. I'll give it a 6.5/10 for now and see if I wake up in a few weeks with a sudden desire to listen to it again (which I feel like could happen with this one).

Thanks James! Like I said, I can see how this would be a great album to introduce someone to punk. I'm just not sure I'll ever be able to really get into the genre:o:

I'm not really trying to convince you of anything but so far you haven't really given any reasons of what you like so much about The Wall. I myself find it boring but what do you like about it?

neither me or dollarsandcents have sent our album, so i guess im not going to be in the next one (uploading a file with more than 20rab is fucking hard)

Glad you liked it. I haven't listened to it for a while myself, but I absolutely love the thing. Great cover too, as Bob quite rightly pointed out.

I've heard your album a couple of times. Just gotta type something up about it and that's me done.

Consider yourself in sir :thurab:

Let's see if we can get the rest of the reviews done by Monday before starting the new swap. So. if anyone's into the idea of joining in next time, let me know here.

I'd have tried to get this started sooner, but I kinda took the last week to stay away from the internet so I could take care of all the other crap I've got to do...
